    Wyoming with 1 point.

Or , like your fishing analogy, wait a few days/weeks until all those that only fish opening day/week are done and catch some fish with fewer people around.

    Wyoming with 1 point.

You'll see this voice online and many with the opposite experience in that the unit was overran with hunters and had few lopes. The reality, for most, is somewhere inbetween.

First elk hunt and success (long post)

thats great- good job and great attitude. If you ever view a thread where someone asks about a certain region, state, etc you typically will see comments of 'tons of pressure' 'there are better units nearby' 'very few animals' 'difficult access' ' to many roads'....list goes on and on and on of...

    Best Base Layer

Silk bases that zip off dont exist that I've seen. FL and KUIU have the zip off merino. Thlete makes a sweet silk base layer

SW Montana experience, and Little Belt Hunter Numbers

I didnt say no elk are getting killed either. I'm saying despite comments around lots of crowds, atvs, etc - people are still killing elk in those units. You may not be able to get away from crowds but it doesnt necessarily mean the elk arent there

SW Montana experience, and Little Belt Hunter Numbers

You see guys say this about pretty much any unit aside from some of the real wilderness units. A lot of people are out hunting everywhere, yet animals still get killed. Try and stay out there , keep a good/realistic attitude and hope you are one of the guys that kills one.

SW Montana experience, and Little Belt Hunter Numbers

Go when the weather turns to crap. I'll echo the 'get away from roads' mentality is far from a hard and fast rule despite what about every podcast and forum post says that you need to get away from people and walk in miles and miles. Guess what- thats what a lot of people are doing now and in...

    Wyoming Unit 26 Success

good work! The high hunting pressure is the norm in the low point units, especially opening weekend. Doesnt mean you cant get on them as you guys did! Dont let it get you upset and do the best you can to adapt and overcome

    South Dakota Archery Trip

I've hunted ND and SD , western side in both. Despite all the pessimism here that EHD somehow killed all the public land deer but spared those on private is funny. PM me if interested, plenty of good spots.

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

Pretty much the same story across much of the west this year unfortunately-- dry with fires. That will change the patterns of them in a hurry...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

Right it just baffles me that all the Western states dont have you register your kill. Its a completely foreign concept for folks like me and you in the midwest. I would disagree the numbers are useless. As I said I get the data isnt overally accurate, and calculating things like elk per sq...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

Yes I've been cross referencing the regs and the pop. charts and putting together one heck of a spreadsheet. I also have the square miles of each unit, av number of elk killed per mile, et,c, etc. I know i can get this stuff via GoHunt and others but I am a analyst by trade so I dont mind...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

You just see so many posts saying to stick with the same area year after year to really learn it, but as you say it would seem to make way more sense to have a handful of spots pre-determined across a few units in your pocket...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

After months digging around I've noticed pretty much any forum post you read on units say the same things like 'high pressure, tough access, all elk go to private, there are better units nearby, etc, etc' I get it, people generally arent going to publicly notate that they went to a unit and...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

I know the numbers are all 'estimates' which is frustrating for a guy from WI where they can tell you exactly how many deer were killed and number of hunters. That said, the numbers are what we have and its better then nothing and at least gives a rough idea of whats going on in the unit...

Montana elk hunting- picking a unit-key things to consider?

I'm heading to MT next fall with a general tag for elk. I've been pouring over Excel sheets of harvest estimates, staring at OnX...all your standard items you can do to prepare from afar. Curious as to what the top things folks look for when picking a unit to start in- % successful, number of...

    Tree Saddles

Find one to borrow to try out. I've used one about 4 years. Its nice if you have long walks as it does shed some weight and bulk although the weight savings isnt that large over something like the Beast or LWCG hang on stands- maybe just a couple lbs. I like it but shooting to your 'weak'...

    Fairbanks Uhaul Beware

Ha reminds me of that classic Seinfeld episode--'So they know how to *take* the reservation, they just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them.

    Wyoming point guidance

I'm trying to build points to draw a general unit tag, who knows w/ pt creep if it will ever happen but in the interim i would like to get a little experience with a unit. I'm trying to find a general unit that also historically has had leftover cow tags- that would get me there to explore...
