Listened for the first time to the infamous Meateater podcast with Steve Rinella and his brother Matt getting into it in a pretty cringeworthy way, imo. I'll say it flatly. I hate seeing hunters in the field. Anywhere. I want my hunting grounds all to myself.
And I'd have to be the biggest...
Great thread and an interesting question. Sadly, I think we're dying out, for so many reasons. One I'll choose is instant gratification. The very idea of sustained focus and patience after an unseen goal that may or may not be realized is increasingly ludicrous to most of the current era, to...
I can't speak to a dry tumbler, though I think they get quite clean, just takes longer as ice-kib says above. I know my Hornady ultrasonic never got as clean as I get now with the wet tumbler.
Then there's the question on whether they even need to get shiny. So long as they're cleaned, and...
Timely maybe. Listening right now to an old Meateater Podcast where Steve Rinella's brother Matt lays into him, and the show devolves to some pretty bad blood. Sad to listen to actually as I understand they've become estranged, but germane, I think, to this issue.
Again, outsider. Maybe hoping against hope, but if they pass out a ton of OTC tags - isn't this compensated some by a comparably larger elk herd, and quite a bit of public land available? Don't know if this is a known metric or if it's even helpful, but is there such a thing as elk density per...
SS pins and Frankford Arsenal soap pods. Dawn and Lemmishine also work as well. Just using up the pods. Where we now live has much harder water so I've learned to dry quickly to avoid staining.
Excellent, thanks AZ. I believe I used Basecamp with my old Oregon 600. Funny, staring up on my wall now, where I have several topos I refer to, mark up and use on the hunt. There's a few things I know a good deal about, and then...this world. Appreciate the info.
Not to restate the obvious, but you mean v. stand-alone GPS units, right? Again, luddite - tech and I aren't friends. Something like a Garmin Montana, there's no similar danger as with a smart phone app like On X?
Pretty much a dinosaur, guys. Only subscribed to On X a few months back. Don't even really need it for where my son and I currently hunt - WI northwoods. Offline topos and waypointing the car are handy but not needed (my paper topos are marked up). Just want to make sure I'm understanding...
Awesome. Interesting, too - deer herd has been hammered up here, but hunter no's are also on the decline.
Well, what molliesmaster said. I'll take up golf. Really. I promise. So you all can go ahead with golf, be right there.
OK, thanks. I guess for me it's not "flipping out," as much as an acknowledgement that the idea of the "lonely hunter, the wilds, elk in their natural state, and the fair chase" is over. If it is, I know, nothing to do but include that as part of the strategic outlook - maybe, use the pressure...
You mean, which area, and which season, right? Basically let's presume it's a public area known to be somewhat productive but not "prime" and it's not the "prime" rifle season. But decent on both counts. If you're willing to get in deep, can you hope to hunt without a ton of pressure, or...
I am a total outsider and have no experience, so everything is virtual so far. From everything I'm gathering, even backcountry elk rifle season is dense with pressure. Is that accurate? Is it possible, really, anymore to "get away," if willing to put the work in, or is that just the sign of...
