    Pouch for InReach MINI?

It should fit fine in most rangefinder pouches. I just clip mine to my pack but haven’t been in a situation where I’ve left it somewhere yet. Dropped camp out and cached it but always have my pack.

    Waterproof Duffle Bag?

Sea to Summit Big River if weight isn’t a major issue. They are what I use when hunting out of a boat. KUIU dry bag if it is, but I’d want them inside another pack of some type if it’s going to be dragged through brush. They are air tight so they should be 100% waterproof.

    Loaning out equipment.

I have borrowed and loaned stuff before. Most of the time it has been fine, but a handful of bad experiences can sour you to the whole thing. It used to be common knowledge that if you borrowed something, you should clean and return it immediately after being done with it, (don’t really want...

How do you fund your hunting trips?

It sounds like you don’t really need to “earn more” to fund your hunting, you just need to budget for it and make sure your family isn’t sacrificing in order for you to go. I agree with setting money aside for each of you to do whatever you want with. If hunting is basically “it“ for you, I’d...

Am I a jerk? (Read before voting)

Agree with what’s been said for the most part. #1. You shouldn’t condition them to always shooting the first thing that comes out, but if he’s killed ONE deer, he’s far from “we only shoot 4.5 year old mature bucks.” It’s good for them to learn patience, putting in some time, and you don’t...

Talk Me Out Of a 6mm Creedmoor

Anybody worked on some reduced recoil loads for one? I have been looking at the 6mm ARC as a kid’s gun, but since Howa has been dragging their feet on coming out with this in the mini action, I’m considering other options. I like the idea of something like a 100 gr cup and core bullet at 2500...

    Longest Kill 6.5 Creedmoor

Well, you see, I gut shot that elk at 175 yards because my cartridge of choice is 40 fps slower than the new 6.5 PRC. Since the wind was more like 12 mph rather than the 10 mph I’d estimated, my bullet drifted way more than I had guessed, so I hit a little bit back…

    Waders for Moose

The Simms Guide classics are made in Montana and look like what I have, the Headwaters Pro (pre G3). They are $450 and Simms has a $50 rebate through 11/10. The G3’s have a few more features, but the classics should still be a pro quality wader. If you won’t need the traction advantages and...

    Longest Kill 6.5 Creedmoor

I believe it has to do with it being the cartridge of choice for many new shooters who go on and on about it being the best thing since sliced bread and it will drop a moose in its tracks at over a mile, while they aren’t able to hit a pie plate at 200 yards. There isn’t a noticeable difference...

Are Thermal Devices Ethical For Predawn Scouting and Hiking?

I hope this isn’t something people abuse until it is banned. I‘ve just recently gotten into night vision and have been researching thermal for hog and predator hunting. Where I think it increases ethics is recovery after the shot, in terms of a thermal monocular. I primarily hunt a 3,600 acre...

How much water to you consume on backcountry hunts?

I used to just start each day with a 3L bladder, but it wasn’t enough without rationing it and it was hard to know how much you’d used. We were always coming down off the mountain empty. I’ve since added a single Nalgene and my hunting partner carries a steripen. It’s much easier to just drink...

How much water to you consume on backcountry hunts?

6-7L a day, I carry 4 in my pack and drink at least a liter in the morning and evening at camp. I live and work in a hot/humid climate, so my body seems to be used to that intake level. When it’s hot here I might drink 2 gallons a day.

    Traditional Clothing

Cabelas used to have some really good wool and Berber fleece stuff with a wind proof liner, but I’m pretty sure Bass Pro has ruined everything decent about the brand. You can pay $500 for a Filson one designed for hipsters to take a 1/2 mile walk in the woods in. My Orvis clothing has all been...

    Kuiu quality?

Worthless thread IMO, but the hat issue could have been due to availability. I order small quantities of wholesale blank hats, including the Richardson’s, and they have been showing out of stock recently. I’m guessing there was a phone call that went something like: ”Hey, those hats you guys...

    Skinny legs

Don’t really get the gaiter hate. I agree with them keeping fir needles out of stuff (amazing how my bino harness can end up full of them), protect your pants and shins climbing over deadfall, help with creek crossings even if it’s just water splashing up, and keep your pants and therefore socks...

Anyone have KUIU TAKU duffle straps come unhooked

I don’t have those duffels, but I have the same clips on my KUIU pack and hate them. Especially on stuff on the bottom of the pack like the bow and gun holders, you set it down, pick it up again, and they have popped open. Most of them are also sewn in so it’s not an easy swap to a typical QR...

    First Focal Plane vs Second

Not sure how much research you’ve done, but I don’t see FFP being majorly beneficial for modern hunting. To my knowledge, they were developed when the military was using the reticle hash marks for ranging targets (humans). With FFP, the distance between the marks would remain consistent...

    Any 1" LPVO w/illumination?

I have one of these on an AR, glass is good enough for 400 yard shooting. https://www.ebay.com/itm/115053129289?hash=item1ac9b36e49:g:xSQAAOSwgvRhbhOF

Went fishing today… tried hard, but…

Yeah, no. There are time where you’re just hanging around outside or on a boat, using “fishing“ as an excuse to be out there. That’s fine. The majority of time time I’m actually fishing, I want to be on the water at first light, tide is right, weather is right, I know what they are feeding on...

    Sock Liner Recommendations?

I’m a huge fan of my Injinji coolmax toe sock liners. My hunting partner tried them last year and they drove him nuts, so definitely try before you go.
