Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

It’s a mystery to me. I’ll try to sell the Weatherby. But it’s a niche cartridge so it’ll take a while.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

UPDATE Federal emailed: “We received test results. Pressure and velocity was within SAAMI specifications. We functioned the ammo in a variety of rifles and we did not encounter any issues. Our examiner was not able to duplicate the blown primer issue that you encountered.” Thanks everyone.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

UPDATE Weatherby called and said their Lead Gunsmith installed a new extractor and extractor spring. The gunsmith checked everything and there was “nothing of note and the rifle is safe to shoot.” The customer service rep also said, “two rounds of function ammo” were fired and everything was...

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

UPDATE The rifle was sent via FedEx to Weatherby today. (I’m looking at replacing it with a Tikka T3X Superlite in .30-06.) Federal received the ammo earlier this week. FWIW Federal said they’d conduct testing and “let me know what their results are.” But they did send a check for the full...

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Very interesting. It seems Federal has an issue with this ammo or with this lot.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Update. Interesting note - The Nosler Accubond cartridges I ordered pre-blown primer arrived and the bolt closed much easier than the Federal Terminal Ascent cartridges. Also worth noting, when I shook the Nosler Accubond cartridge I was able to hear the powder in the case. When I shook the...

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

FWIW, I inserted the fired cartridge into the chamber and it wouldn’t go in. An unfired cartridge dropped in completely.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

You think Weatherby incorrectly sold a 7Mag as a 280AI. The barrel is stamped 280AI.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Confirmed with the guide again. He’s “had issues with 6.5 CM and prefers .30-06.” I’ll try a new outfitter/guide next time. I’m pretty much locked in with them. Good idea about U-HAUL. I’ll check them out.

I’ll save one going forward. Good idea.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

I did not notice the ring until you identified it. That is very disturbing.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Good idea. Do you have experience doing exactly what you described with Weatherby?

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

I’ll keep everyone updated through this experience. The forward plan is to mail the ammo back to Federal for testing tomorrow or Friday as I have a box and label ready.

    Yes, bulletproof cows! They’re indestructible.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

It’s a basic bolt action. Weatherby Vanguard. But it’ll shoot 0.75 MOA at 100 yds with Barnes LRX. And it has a 4-16x scope.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

I wouldn’t disagree. But the outfitter for this cow hunt specifically said, “no 6.5 CM”.

    5 - M1 Garands 1 - 6.5 Creedmoor 1 - AR 5.56 So, they’re not ideal for elk.

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Thanks everyone for the guidance. I certainly do not want to experience this again - especially the hot gas in my face. Weatherby emailed a shipping label so I’ll send it to them ASAP for testing. (I just need to figure out where I can buy a shipping box for a rifle.) Federal also emailed a...

Blown primer. New rifle. Only 1 round fired.

Of course, I don’t want to risk shooting the rifle again. I suppose I’ll need to buy or borrow a rifle in the meantime. Is anyone familiar with Weatherby’s resolution or turn around time? Are they easy to work with?
