    New Sevr Hybrid

    I switched a month ago and have taken 2 deer so far. Have to say that I’m impressed. I’m colorblind and have no trouble following the blood trail. Both were down in sight and less than 40 yards. I’m a former mechanical hater.

    Gun for Elk Hunting in Thick Timber

    Have a Remington 673 in 300 saum with a Leupold 3.5-10x 40 that points like a shotgun and hits like a hammer. Never taken a shot at a moving elk, but this rifle would be my pick.

    Hunting solo, I use a decoy, call at the decoy then move down wind about 10 yards. Agree with others, a frontal at 20 yards is deadly.

    Taking SS early (62)

    I retired with a pension at 58. Turned 62 and started SS ASAP. I ran the numbers based on advice from a friend that is an accountant and found that my break even point was 91 years old. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one, let alone another 8 or 29 years.

    How Many Still Prefer To Hunt Alone?

    Took a couple young guys, 21 & 25, to Colorado this year. At 63, I found them to be a little immature, the 21 year old in particular. Spent most of their time in camp on their phones and didn’t pitch in much. It’s probably a generational thing. I had hoped for better.

    Your first deer rifle?

    I was a poor blue collar guy with a new family when I found a Remington 788 carbine in 243. Mounted a Bushnell scope on it and killed a truck load of deer and coyotes with that rifle. It was amazingly accurate for a cheap rifle.

    What's your elk schedule?

    Heading out at noon on Friday. Should be setting up camp Saturday morning. Will be hunting 2-14. If I was solo, I’d be there until the 21st.
