I'll be in South Central-ish Wyoming for the 9/20 opener as well. Luckily I had to drive up to Wyoming for work a couple weeks ago, so I got to swing through and do a little inventory on my unit. Good luck and happy hunting.
You count them all in Texas. With doing more western hunting than anything lately, I tend to "read the room" depending on who I am talking to. But for the most part for Whitetails its an 8, 9, 10, etc. Mule deer a 3x4, 4x4, and so on.
It may not be available this year. The San Rafael- Mounds Reef area bordered the San Rafael North Cleveland to the southwest.
It was a rifle hunt both times.
I've done San Raf North Cleveland and Mounds Reef.
Fun enough hunts. I mixed the first one with some fly fishing in the mountains above Ferron and Huntington. The second trip I swung through Arizona and scouted my elk unit.
I would stay further north just to save yourself some time. But if you do go down to White Sands, swing by the Three Rivers Petroglyph site, eat lunch in Capitan and if it’s of interest drive a few more miles for some Wild West history (Billy the Kid, etc) in Lincoln.
If you’re looking for landowner type tags and dream type hunts... Nevada/New Mexico LO tags, White Mountain Apache Reservation in AZ, or Deseret in Utah.
Horseback hunt sounds like British Columbia.
New Mexico draw is always an option, there’s always a chance, just a small one.

No draw in Canada, just have to book early enough with guys to get good dates/areas. I hunted moose and whitetail with Alpine Outfitters in Alberta. Didn’t get a deer and killed a smaller moose day 8 of my 7 day hunt. He worked his and my ass off looking for animals, just didn’t work out for...
