Ive had the same experience as mentioned above, ive been in thunderstorms that every time it would thunder real loud the bulls would bugle ....
More important than actively hunting in the rain, i also just hole up under trees, is being there when the rain ends... you wanna be on the mountain...
All you can do is grid like you did, and i'd have gotten there first thing Saturday, those ravens and crows find that carcass quick, they may have gotten on it Saturday yet even.
Aint no chance im chasing a Grizz off an elk kill.
Me personally if a grizz was on my kill after a couple of days...
Well let us know how it goes, i'd be getting on the road ina hurry if i were you and your aiming to get this done for archery season, only a couple weeks left.
Looking forward to the write up!
you just need to end up in public land, in an over the counter unit that is on that map someone linked up above, which out here in CO there is plenty of. Get on a dirt road, drive until you think you found a spot you wanna hike in and hunt. Find a pull off near it, sleep, get up, hike in and...
Ive used "Basemap" and OnX..... pros and cons to both. OnX i think has better maps and has some nice icons to drop. I may be too dumb to figure it out, but i cant find an "arrow" icon for myself and which way im facing.... Basemap has the leg up on that..... Compass mode was the best i...
Ive found them feeding in aspen groves .... and fields.... and openings ..... and above treeline .....and sage brush.... and thick forest.... and this year the elk i killed had a mouthful of weeds he was feeding on in the dark timber / beetle kill / deadfall hole ..... all to say i find elk...
Hopefully he's out slayin bulls as we speak. I was just talking to the guy at the meat processor and he started raving about elknut out of the blue.
"you ever heard of Elknut?"
"of course i have, i learned most of my elk calling watching and listening to his stuff"
"oh man, he's amazing, i...
Well after i had him taken apart i started looking at at the Topo and found another path out... still steep, still nasty, but not anything like i came up.... when i was taking him apart i figured i was just gonna throw the meat down the steep part i had come up haha.... luckily topo showed a...
agreed, i suspect massive internal damage (probably heart?) cause there wasnt much blood from neither side.... but i pulled the arrow out like.... 5 minutes after i shot him... he expired rapidly
nope, thats the arrow that piled him up. It entered just in front of his shoulder , basically if the bull was facing you, to the far right of the the grapefruit sized shot on the frontal ... it actually clipped through part of his shoulder blade which i suspect is what slowed the momentum...
that was my plan, but timing this year of when i killed the bull and when i need to fly across the country for a wedding kinda threw a wrench into that plan. Basically gotta fly out tomorrow for the whole dang week cause its family getting married.
Fact is.... i just cant pass em up. No self restraint.
Went out yesterday mornin for my 2nd day of hunting this season.... Got into the hunting spot Friday night, had some time to glass some cows up above treeline in the area.
Went to bed, and around 3 am could hear a bull bugling across...
East Gila NM had some bugling according to step dad who was mulie hunting down there. I heard a couple bugles Monday on the opener in CO (prompted by me, i heard zero bugles from bulls just sounding off on their own). Crowded with hunters as usual .... go high and go nasty.
same issues for me, i'm gonna be focused on last couple weeks of the season, work crept into the first week and then a wedding suffocated the second week.
I'll still nab a day or two here and there at the start... im willing to make a long long drive even for a single day of hunting.
Im gonna hold for a bull ... i may regret it .... i'd like to fill the freezer for sure this year cause next year i think i'm gonna be focused on Mulies with friends ..... That said.... i'd probably take a cow that last week .... assuming i even have the chance.
Just went through the hunting pack ... switched out the knife sharpener for a better one, charging some batteries like the garmin mini, and a small flash light that has a lithium in it.
Make sure the knives are sharp
Make sure you got extra batteries
Go charge your stuff and check your...
