I am looking forward to hearing about it. I have not yet hunted deer in the Blue Range, I have only helped a buddy on his rifle mule deer hunt there quite a few years ago, in the fall. I am curious what it will be like in Jan. I hope you take some photos to share as well. A storm just moved...
It has been a few years since I have stayed or eaten in Alpine, but I have used the Sportsmans Lodge and Bear Wallow Café several times each in the past, and both were rather average but suitable. Just typical aging small town establishments. No offense intended, if the owners are watching!
I think there may have been an issue with the published stat data from AZ G&F. The new reg booklet does not have the stat data for last year in it like it usually does. Apparently it did when they first posted it, I know of one person who downloaded the initial document before they removed the...
Nothing super crazy here.
Multiple close encounters with rattlesnakes, as in stepping within striking distance before they rattled and scared the crap out of me, a couple of them over 5 feet long.
Multiple close encounters with lightning in the mountains. One time, I was in a one-man tent...
All the border units are going to have drug and human smuggling activity. But the smugglers don't like unwanted attention. I do not know any people who hunt down there having any real issues.
The 36's are the only ones I am somewhat familiar with down there, and all three of them have decent...
If you are hunting mule deer, focus on the lower elevations. If you gain too much elevation, you will start to see mostly Coues. I have not been out kicking around the desert lately, but I have heard the rut is picking up steam.
Just get out there and glass!
I use Miller's regularly for deer and elk, but I don't generally do any kind of sausages or sticks from deer or elk. But yeah, Miller's is great, and Mark is an excellent taxidermist.
The dog looks interested. :D
I'll have to give Von Hansen's a try. I have used Denmark in the west valley, and Schreiner's near downtown Phx. Both of those are good.
From the regs:
R12-4-305. Possessing, Transporting, Importing, Exporting, and Selling Carcasses or Parts of Wildlife
A. An individual shall ensure that evidence of legality remains with the carcass or parts of a carcass of any wild
mammal, bird, or reptile that the individual possesses...
I've eaten a bunch of them. They are definitely edible, but not my favorite. I find the meat a bit on the gamy side no matter how carefully you field dress it. Depends on the animal too. The old boars are the smelliest, and gamiest, in my experience. But I have never had one I couldn't eat...
In addition to deformed tips, is it possible the bullets are also being driven farther into the cases, shortening OAL and possibly affecting accuracy on follow-up shots?
Not likely I'd guess...just a thought that crossed my mind.
If you have not heard of MFK Game Calls, search on Youtube. They have a bunch of instructional and hunting videos. They make diaphragm style mouth calls that let you call hands-free. Those guys are pretty deadly and have perfected a huge variety of animal sounds with those calls. In some of...
It will be a crap shoot. Much of that country is over 6,000 ft., there could be quite a bit of snow, or there could be none. I think the odds are pretty good there will not be too much to deal with, and lower country is not too far away in the event some weather comes through. Just keep an...
I may get out to do some barrel break-in this weekend, and hopefully get a feel for how it likes the factory ammo. Working up hand loads will follow if needed...or even if not. :)
