    A 308 Hitting a Deer at 500 Yards is….

I have only been hunting with a .308 for a few years, but I’ve been impressed using the 165 grn SSTs. I shot this 300 plus pound boar hog at 80 yds through the front shoulder. It had the thickest shield of any hog I’ve ever shot at around 3/4” thick. I found the bullet just under the hide off...

    ILF question.

Thanks for the responses. I have hunted the thick woods in the southeast for most of my life. As a result, I never needed lots of different guns, or bows for that matter. Always kind of been a keep it simple stupid kind of guy. I shot the same compound bow for 20 years. Once I find something...

    ILF question.

I am only six months into my Trad journey. I started last October with an inexpensive Fleetwood Knight take down recurve. It is not ILF, but it did come in several different limb strengths so I started with 30 pounds to develop form, and then moved up to 40 pounds for hunting. My draw length...

    Hog wild

The hogs are outcompeting the other Big Game in the mountains of North GA where I hunt. Black Bear numbers are good, but the Deer and Turkey populations are abysmal. The hogs were not the cause of the decline in our deer herd, but they definitely are making it more difficult for the deer...

REI Co-Op Helix Insulated Air Sleeping Pad

I just purchased the Helix on sale as well to have a backup for my Big Agnes Rapide. It’s not as thick as the Big Agnes, but the R value is supposedly a little better. I’m a side sleeper and weigh around 200lbs. When laying on my side with the pad fully inflated it felt like my hips were...

Anyone been bit by a rattlesnake in back country?

I have stepped close to a couple of Timber Rattlers but thankfully they just reacted like most Timbers and buzzed. I’ve heard they are pretty mild mannered compared to other rattlesnake sub species, and it takes a lot to get one to strike. The one in the pic was a good size.

Anyone been bit by a rattlesnake in back country?

I have often thought the same thing, and that’s what the SOS button on the Zoleo is for.

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

Fake News! But make sure to shoot them all.

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

Actually, I have plenty of experience with snakes, and have handled many. Cottonmouths are thick and intimidating looking. When they gape with their mouth wide open and fangs exposed, it will definitely get your attention. I’m not disputing your experiences, but I do believe most people that...

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Keep on shooting.

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

A cottonmouth wants nothing to do with people, and as far as the chasing stories go those are nothing more than myths. If someone is standing in between the snake, and where that snake wants to go, then it would likely move towards them, but that does not mean that the snake is chasing that...

    Pack-out photos.

Those are some fabulous photos and memories. I’m honestly kind of jealous of that open terrain out West. It’s thick as dogs fur over here in the southern Appalachians. I’m usually lucky if I can see 40 yards.

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

If someone has the time to pull out a pistol and shoot a snake before being bitten, then they have the time to walk around it and leave it be. Snakes don’t chase people.

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

I have never hunted in grizzly country, but I do hunt black bears in the southern Appalachians where it can be thick as dogs fur. Most of my hunting is in the afternoons/evenings until dark, and blood trailing a bow shot bear through the thick mountain laurel solo after dark is a gut check. My...

    Black Bear Stories

I shared the following story in another thread, but it happened this past fall, and thought it was worth sharing again. A buddy of mine was hunting this past fall with his 13-year-old son. We are in extreme North Georgia in the southern Appalachians where there are lots of black bears. This...

Have you ever had one of those days...............years?

On opening day of archery a buddy of mine spent an hour climbing the mountain up to his bear hunting spot before realizing he had forgotten to unscrew his field points, and put on his broad heads.

Attrition rate of newby traditional archers

I will be 60 this year, and just re entered the Trad waters last fall. I tried it for the first time around five years ago, but after a month or two I quickly became discouraged due to lack of consistency. I did not know any other Trad shooters at that time, and did not realize I was heavily...

    Too dang fat

Yep. Another vote for intermittent fasting. In my case, that’s just a fancy way of saying skip breakfast, and increase your fasting window. I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half, and it was a little bit of an adjustment for the first couple of weeks since I was always one who enjoyed...

    Looking buy a used pack!

Another vote for the Horn Hunter Full Curl. You can purchase the entire 3 piece combo new for close to your budget, or purchase the 3 pieces separately. The best part about it is the frame with the large pocketed wings and hip belt for around $170 online. I just returned from a little...
