I stand corrected.
Energy and retained velocity do not matter when evaluating terminal performance.
Pick what bullet you want and stick it in the right spot… “boiler room,” “high shoulder,” “TX heart,” …
I withdraw my former statements.

I disagree.
While those metrics may not be as important and some people claim, they are not meaningless.
Your statement may as well be that BC and SD don’t matter.
If your implication is that bullet construction and minimum impact velocities are MORE important, then I would agree.

For extended ranges with the 308 Win, it’s hard to beat the performance of the 178 ELDX or 168 VLD for retained energy and expansion at low velocities.
I like the 150-class for TX whitetail and I’ve had great success with both 150 soft points and 150 mono metal at ranges up to 200 yards.

That will get the job done. The $77 rangefinder recommended above will also get the job done. As important as having a rangefinder is know what your bullet does at each distance, both in terms of drop/wind and terminal performance.
Good luck.

If I reloaded, I’d go with the 168 LRX. I used the hammer hunters last season on deer and one stag. They did the job but I’m going back to lead this year. I’m using the 7 PRC for elk this year and going with the 180 ELDM… since I don’t reload. I’m gonna give the 160 CX a try, too.
Good luck...
The 300 win (or any other .30 mag) is probably the best do-all North American cartridge.
The “meat damage” is a silly arguments to me. One animal loss to inadequate bullet will me more meat loss than the some of any blood-shot ammo from your .300 mag.
That said, the .270 Win is more than...
Your setup looks good. I think a 6.5 & 338 combo is going to be great.
My only suggestion would be to keep the same barrel length for a consistent feel between the two.
I’m interested in the 113gr 6.5 bullets you’re using. I’ve never seen or heard of them. Guess I got some googling to do...
