It comes down to multiple variables (hunting pressure, deer density, habitat cover, the location of the camera proximal to their bedding area, and the individual animals personality).
The biggest factor is the animals personality & age. I’ve personally found that older animals begin to get...
I’ve found myself preferring single shots & OU shotguns.
Between the compactness, they swing better to me, and I find myself taking better shots because I know that I only have 1/2 shots.
My next SS rifle will either be a 44Mag, 45-70 or .300BLK.
Traditional scopes shine in lower light compared to Red Dot’s or LVPO’s.
Red dots & LVPO’s sound cool and all, until you’re in a creek bottom during an overcast evening and you have a hog/buck coming, in but can’t see out of your optic to find/verify your target.
Animals move the most at...
My “Go To” deer rifle has been a CVA Scout in 6.5CM with an SWFA 3-9 for several years now
I also built an MK12 variant AR that will be getting some play time this season. But that compact single shot with absolutely be the starter.
I’ve owned several SH & BG sights on multiple different bows. I will take BG sights for bow hunting whitetails every single time. The pin brightest sets them apart.
Durability wise, I’ve dropped a bow out of a tree, onto a BG sight and didn’t have any issues.
That’s my .02
I’m in Georgia, really no “dog” in this fight because we can hunt with firearms from Mid October until January.
That being said, I used to hear all of the time the reason for our extremely long firearm season and liberal bag limits (10 does & 2 bucks) was because the Insurance Companies were...
Realistically 2” with good ammo.
I haven’t tried with the new trigger yet though. I’d imagine the groups would tighten up some with a lighter and significantly better trigger than milspec
I bought this 18” 1-7 twist, .223 Wylde PSA AR back in college. Sat stock for years, until I got bored and began modifying it.
Triggertech Duty Trigger: 3.5# single stage
Aero Precision Enhanced Buffer tube & spring
Tactical EX Stock
Magpul Grip
Radian SD Charging Handle
Radian 45 degree...
I don’t hunt bucks much before mid-October. I’ll wear out some does, though.
Typically our September winds are out of the East/SE down here in GA… meaning swirling light/variable winds. Try “hunting the wind” when it’s going 360 degrees around you without any rhyme or reason. At least the...
I’m biased towards SWFA’s. I grabbed a 3-9 and recently a 5-20 on the Classifieds here from some awesome people.
Truth be told, it’s the (reliability) & simple yet effective reticle that keeps me coming back to SWFA’s. I almost left for Nightforce, but the reticle options are too “busy” in my...
I own a TC Compass that I grabbed with a rebate for sub $200 a few years back.
5R barrel with hand loads was producing sub MOA 5-Shot groups.
Really can’t complain for that price.
Almost every deer I’ve shot with a rife has been free-handed. Not off of a bag or bench. That’s just how it goes.
IMO we as hunters need to focus more on practicing and technique, than gear. It may be “easier” to buy success or precision, but achieving it through hard work is more rewarding, IMO.
Heck yeah!
I’m actually doing the same thing, but with an old Palmetto State Armory upper/lower in .223 Wylde.
Changed out the trigger, buffer system, grips, CH, safety and stock… Waiting for WOA to bring 18” barrels in 1-7 twist/rifle length gas system back in stock.
Topping it with an...
Looking to sell or trade my Arken SH4 as listed above. Scope was a safe queen its entire life. Minor scope ring marks, aside from that it’s like new. Comes with all original packaging, I will include mid height Talley rings as well.
Just looking to get into something a little smaller in size and...
These rifles are “best” left in their factory configuration, aside from maybe chopping the barrel down to 16-18”. The adjustable stock mod ends up weighting more and costing several hundred dollars. That plastic factory stock weights like 6-8oz if memory serves me correct.
Adding a 25-30oz...
The best way to manage deer habitat is with a drip torch, feller buncher, chainsaw and sunlight.
By doing select timber cuts, allowing more sunlight to the forest floor, rotating prescribed fires every 1-3 years and doing some minor TSI-hack & squirt etc… that is the best way to provide...
