Oh I tried this! My rifle doesn't like them.
I've been boning out or quartering deer since 2014, I think? It's the way to go.
And I absolutely agree with your thoughts on scouting, etc. I've hiked likely hundreds of miles in the last 10 years here, and really enjoy the process of reading...
It's fascinating to see the different directions people go with their short range rifles.
I will say, I'm a fan of bolt actions. I get the arguments for ARs but if I do put a setup together for this it will be a bolt gun. I have a ton more familiarity with them.
That doesn't mean an AR isn't...
I'd be curious what your recommendation would be. 0-80 yds, performance at the edge of legal shooting light, fast developing shot opportunities, moving animals at times (I don't shoot them running, but will shoot them walking).
I don't need versatility here, if I may shoot further I have other...
The opportunity to shoot twice is always better than once.
As far as cartridge size, I've shot enough animals with my 6.5 to know that it's quite a bit more than I need for these shot opportunities. I shoot my rifles a lot, and there is no equal to a 223 when it comes to volume of practice...
I get it. And it's probably a case of wanting to change something that works just fine. I'd just like to maximize field of view and the ability to identify lanes coming up with moving animals. I also don't go below 4x with my SWFA usually, as it tunnels at 3x.
I shot a doe at 10 yds last year...
Funny thing, I have a Model Seven, but the only thing original on it is the action. It's my longer range rig currently. I had a hard time warming up to it in factory form as it's balance point was too far back.
I'm personally pretty committed to sticking with 223. Just too much fun to practice...
I spent some time this fall thinking about a specific type of hunt I do, and what rifle setup would be ideal for it. I'm going to lay out what I've come up with and also some questions that remain for those who have more experience than I. It's the off season, and we need productive things to...
I'm interested in where this goes!
I've always wanted to put a kit together and hunt with one here in MO's late primitive season. Any thoughts on a good first kit for someone to tackle? I'd be looking for a 50 cal, percussion.
