Saturday is for the boys
@Formidilosus can you share your supported sitting/kneeling position? Getting sticks deployed and sitting is what I’m doing and it’s the hardest for me of the positions in terms of time.
I will give my opinion only with the caveat that I am not a backpack hunter. Rather, I like to walk my family property (about 260 acres) and hunt a couple of other small properties from time to time. At the most, I walk 2-3 miles at a time in eastern ridge and valley land so weight isn't a...
I've been pretty pleased with mine (T3X in 223 and 6.5 Creedmoor). I've tinkered with Hornady 75 ELDs, 73 ELDs, 75 BTHP as well as Sierra 77 TMKs. I've been able to get most of them to shoot well without much load work. These were all shot using a 6x scope and fancy targets.
As always, don't...
I loaded up 12 dummies (no powder, no primer). I place them on my shooting mat (so I don't lose them in the grass), put one live round in the pile, close my eyes, mix them around, load my mag, place mag in rifle. No peeking. Its a little more convenient for me since I have a 10 round mag and...
I have the same question. I haven’t found that type of standing position to be more consistent, especially if there’s any wind at all, without a shooting jacket. Might be poor technique on my part. Looking forward to people’s replies.
No wind really helps. The targets still say I stink. Makes me appreciate Form knocking out a 17/20 with gusts of 25 mph.
I also took Form's advice to train with dummy rounds and found that equally as enlightening. Highly recommended!
That totally makes sense, and I have tape on mine for actual adjustments that fit me as well. I thought your tape was to lock it down.
how about the 3-9? Does it not hamper your ability at longer ranges? Or is it just not an issue for your typical hunting ranges
+1 for the 10m focus/parallax on the SWFA.
Speaking of scopes.... Form, I noticed you challenge people on thinking they need parallax adjustment on low powered scopes (I would fall into this category) and it looks like you have your 6x SWFA parallax adjustment taped. I obviously have the 6x as...
What performance did you see within different velocity windows with the ELD? similar to your posts on the TMK?
My experience is limited to Berger 6.5 140 Elite Hunters, .308 168 ELDs, and 6.5 143 ELD-Xs.
Got to work on some loads for the Tikka now that I got a jug of Varget in.
I couldn't get the 75gr ELD to shoot at all. 10 round groups were over 2".
I have had good luck with the 73gr ELD and 75gr Hornady BTHP.
Form, have you used either of these bullets on game? If anyone else has...
Unless it’s a hot muggy night I think it would be fine. Honestly haven’t spent a night in it that wasnt in the 50s or less and i was still using a light bag so I doubt you would be sweating in the 60s. I like having it and a light tarp for solo stuff.
Definitely understand the torque issue. I’ve placed both sling mounting points on the support side of the rifle to help alleviate that (rifle stays fairly well aligned axially without the firing hand’s input). I’ll try to experiment both ways. Looking forward to the reference that...
I can’t speak to the REI but I own and have used the OR alpine quite a bit. It’s a solid piece of gear, as the weight will remind you, but inspires confidence when the weather goes south on top of a mountain and you’re solo. That puppy goes a long way in keeping warm and dry in terrible...
Hoping to do another round or two tomorrow after practicing positions. Speaking of positions, Form, when you shoot with two hands on the rifle (i.e. standing, unsupported seated, supporting seated), do you generally put rearward pressure on the gun with your support hand as well as your firing...
Haha laugh away, brother. For the record, I had sights on target before the trigger finger got on, but you see the result. I simply wasn’t ready/in full control of that round. I’m accustomed to either having a Glock or AR in hand when the timer is running so that was another lesson learned...
