As others have said, it’s not the bullet. If you hit a whitetail with a 308 at 100 yards anywhere near the tight spot, it won’t go far. Heck I’d be confident shooting an elk at 350 with that ammo.
That’s so nuts, you are in custom rifle territory at that price point. Not to mention a rifle of that price could be an heirloom passed to your children vs a bow that would be worth next to nothing in 6 or 7 years.
To each their own, no judgement. I’ve killed enough deer that a Muley that scores below 160 doesn’t interest me much. Yes this does mean I eat some tags lol.
Not
Not saying this wouldn’t work, but the 308 with 168 tmk’s is good to go to at least 400 yards for elk, farther if you’re at higher altitudes. Probably same deal for the 6.5 cm with something like the eldx but I don’t have first hand real world experience with that one.
6.5 cm is more than adequate for anyone. I use a .308 and have shot several large bulls and they died immediately. The furthest one went about 10 yards.
If you are hunting public land don’t be too hard on yourself. It is very challenging. Add to that if you aren’t local and you want to shoot a decent 6x6 and you’re looking at low single digit success rates. It doesn’t mean you should give up, just have to keep it in perspective. Hunting...
Thanks brother good to know, I wasn’t aware of that. In that case, I suppose the federal gold medal TMK is likely as good as anything? Trying to wring the most range possible out of the 308 for long range ringing steel with factory ammunition.
.523 bc and just over 2800fps. At my altitude it stays supersonic to 1400yards. Anyone know of a factory offering in 308 that has better ballistics?

I will go with the “don’t overthink it” crowd. I recently had the same “problem” as you, I got drawn for a last minute AZ elk tag. I’ve mostly been varmint hunting and ringing steel with small calibers the last 10 years or so. The only suitable elk rifle I have is a Remington 700 police in...
Agree but don’t think it’s just the current administration. Been the same for 50+years. Making everyone think either party cares about anything but power keeps us distracted and allows us to be pitted against each other so they can gain more control.
