    Alaska spring grizzly

Just got back from second hunt of the year. Loads of snow made for a amazing five days of slogging around in snowshoes, sunburns, wind burns, white outs, snow storms, hail storms, blowing snow. However amidst normal winters conditions we saw three Grizz and were able to knock out a three mile...

    Favorite Sheep Caliber

Sheep are not difficult to kill. At all. My fav are the ballistic flat shooters in case we end up needing the distance. 280 Ackley tops that list. 270 300 7mm all great. 7-08,308, 30-‘06,264, heck the 6.5 creed might even kill one!

Whose done lathrop and sons foot mapping system?

They recommended one other brand to me as well. They did not push their product at all. Gave me the choice. They actually said 100% they could get me into lowa boots and make it fit. 80% chance they could mold their elite hunters to make them fit. I don’t want lowa so I said let’s run for the 80%!

Whose done lathrop and sons foot mapping system?

Great story. Thanks for sharing. Got some new socks and the fit in the boots is much better. I think I was just using socks to fill dead space in my old boots. Playing with insoles now. I love a plain felt insole as they are warm, cushion, and easy to toss in my bag at night to dry out. The l...

Need outfitter recommendations (fullyoutfitted/guided) in Alaska

Tony lee of westwind guide service is in one of the best moose areas I know of. Sam fejes has unreal moose down on the tsiu river country. Alaska Peninsula Wildman lake lodge has some great moose as well. These are all areas I’ve been. I know tony well, met Sam a few times and have guided out of...

1 piece of advice for Archery Moose Hunters

“That’s a dead bull” should never be said of a bull that isn’t currently dead. When you stick your finger in the wound channel, then say it. Shoot them again. No shame in that. I stuck my mountian goat three times because I wasn’t sure how good the first shot was.

    skinning for a rug

Heel to butt hole on hind legs. Palm to sternum on the fronts. Throat to sternum to butt hole on your long cut. Just make straight knife cuts. To build that confidence go talk to that taxidermist. It’s pretty simple.

    Quilt verse Bags

I use a heavy -20 bag for my base camp because I like heavy blankets. The rest Of the time my 0 degree EE quilt goes with me and I look forward to every night I’ve crawled in it!i won’t be buying a backpacking sleeping bag ever again.

Whose done lathrop and sons foot mapping system?

Got my hunter elite boots in today! Man, nice boots. You can tell these aren’t from cabelas lol I haven’t wore them around yet, tried them on a couple times and need to switch to a thinner sock. My old boots were bigger and I just filled the extra space with sock I guess. Lol I can tell there is...

    Identification of sow with cubs

Grizzly cubs seem more fearless and black bear cubs seem more like a kitten. I’ve seen grizzly cubs venture a long way from mom just doing their own thing but I don’t recall seeing black bear cubs do that. Also had yearling grizzlies come over to check out my Sheep camp even with me yelling and...

    WTT hilleberg ENAN for tipi

I have a hilleberg one man enan tent. It has been modified with better end ventilation and additional tie out points. Only damage was a melt spot on door screen that has gorilla tape on it. Includes foot print. Otherwise in great shape, only used a couple times. I can get photos of these things...

    Identification of sow with cubs

I’ve watched sow bears feed in the open for hours with their cubs just off in the brush, then scoop them up when they head back to the edge of the open. Typically if a bear feeds and don’t travel much and keeps looking in the same direction I start to suspect something.

    Kuiu vs Hilleberg

Just a single mantel one. Either one that ops off the green 1lb bottle or there’s the smaller one that runs off the msr fuel. Good thread in the gear forum about lanterns.

Kodiak Bear Hunting - when to book?

I was doing goat last year north end. We’d go look at the river for fun. First week of oct we would see about 14 bears at a time. Second week of oct about 6-8 bears. Third week of October they were off the river and up by our tent. Then bear season opens. Kodiak fall season is set up late just...

    Kuiu vs Hilleberg

I’ve tried the little candle lanterns but get almost zero heat and the light sucks so I never used a candle again. My lantern I prefer To hand it low so it heats the whole tent. Hang a lantern high and it really only heats from the lantern up. I hang mine right off the floor so I don’t knock it...

    Kuiu vs Hilleberg

Akdoc I also prefer my own space on Sheep hunts. Smaller footprint tents are easier to find places to pitch as well. I’ll double up on goat hunts where there’s usually more places to pitch a bigger tent.

    Kuiu vs Hilleberg

Ya I hear ya. Spending time gathering enough wood also don’t sound like something I’d want to do every time I moved camp again either.

    Kuiu vs Hilleberg

No kuiu tent time. I do have a hilleberg enan and anjan gt 2 man. The enan was the wettest tent I have ever slept in. I contact hilli about it. They told me. (This is no joke) we carry a trash bag to cover our sleeping bags and a towel to wipe down the inside of the tent. That’s what they...

    Age this sheep

I’d want to see him again but wouldn’t be putting all my bets on him being legal this fall. He may only grow a half inch. I’d bet he will be at least 8 thought this fall. Based off a fuzzy pic at a weird angle. Rams got a young face though. Does this make it any bigger of a pic?
