I’ve put numerous holes in browns with my 10mm. None were impressive. None were life threatening situations.
A handgun is just a convenient way to carry something to make us feel better and safer. To be our own first responder.
Whatever gun you have is a bear gun when a bear shows up. 9mm...
I’ve guided them and done it myself. Spot and stalk and baited hunts. There’s so many variables to this.
If I had to choose one location. One experience.
It would be Alaska peninsula in the fall. I would never bow hunt Kodiak if I only had one shot at it. (Guided there for 25 years).
Bait is...
no I canceled my moose guys. Numbers in south central Alaska took a big hit last winter. Moose are down. I can’t take someone’s money for a hunt I wouldn’t do myself ya know?
Justin’s good people. Bear numbers will likely be down a bit after all the predator control they are working out that way. A 9’ bear will likely be rare over there. Guided out there quite a bit and only ever saw one bear over 9 I knew of. But they are there! Amazing country. Get a fishing license!
Bears do not “rut”. Bears are induced ovulators. Their ovaries drop once they begin to breed. Sows are what’s called receptive to breeding. That is what most folks confuse with rut. She is not ovulating or in estrus like a deer.
A buck can one and done a doe. A boar will stay with a sow...
Depends if you’re looking at spring or fall. I’ve guided both places and guided archery hunters on the peninsula. Fall hunts hands down I’d do the peninsula. The season is three weeks earlier and salmon much more abundant. Spring, I would do Kodiak. They are two different places for sure. Bears...
Oct they can be anywhere. Digging roots mostly. The bigger bears are typically nocturnal and you can’t a glimps of them early and late. Most bears you see are usually 3 years olds that are stupid. Don’t shoot a baby bear. Residents do it all the time. See a big head and go wow boom. But if it...
For what it will cost you to own. Operate. Maintain, insure. Fly enough to be proficient. With a super cub. You could afford 2-4 major fly out hunts a year and not have to loose sleep at night worrying about your airplane.
So, I’ve taken brown bears with a rifle, pistol, and bow. I guess spear is the logical next choice.
Anyone here have any spear experience with any hunting? This is a new endeavor and I’m researching it but there’s a lack of good info I can find on quality spears, makes or models out there?
I have been guiding Alaska 25 years and my own business for 19 of those years. Having dealt with the financial aspect of a hunt from the guides side I would agree with those that say take it all up front and YOU be the one to give money back if they don’t tag. Otherwise you’re gonna get screwed...
