Hmm in the 22 years I was a SD resident, I don’t think I could count the number of storms I had a boat tied to the shore for and have never had an issue. Sure doesn’t sound fun though lol pretty sure I’d call someone to come get me
I would agree with the above. Few places are more than 2 miles from a road. Only exception would be some areas along oahe where the only access is by boat and getting in and out daily could be enough of a pain to make camping worth it.
As for gear, range finder, binos/spotting scope, backpack...
Have been charged twice but both bluff charges and didn’t actually shoot or spray either. One griz and one black. Both in Montana. The griz was while mountain biking when I came around the corner to a sow with a cub. I didn’t have anything with me (stupid but I was a teen and thought I was...
Very true. CA could benefit from a spring season and more tags and the bear population supports it, but it’s CA so won’t happen. Also being able to hunt when more of the fruit is ripe and more time to hunt while they’re active is certainly an advantage. Other negatives for me is the lead free...
Rig is a Subaru Outback lol but I don’t hunt out of vehicles and do all my hunting on foot. If I bought anything I’d probably want horses, mules or lamas. Don’t enjoy hunting anywhere close to a road because of how busy it can get
I said CA has second most bears and that it does… never compared one to the other by any other metric. However, majority of the state isn’t open to bear hunting. The area that is, is a similar size as Washington and the VAST majority is accessible public lands. Further, majority of the bears are...
Makes sense. CA population in 80s was 10,000. Mid 2010s around 35,000. DFW came out a couple months ago and said it may be as high as 80,000 now! At this rate CA will have more bears than Alaska soon lol
Nope. California has second most. Extremely underrated for bear hunting, especially when considering the various type of hunting possible. Sometimes feel like I shouldn't share it because it is so under the radar, but we have so many bears and population increasing so quickly that I share anyway.
I only anticipate being here for another 2 years or so, at which point I would likely change back to lead. I'm inferring from your qualifier about non-lead, that using lead would have a >0% of needing a 1:10?
I'll preface this with saying I don't totally know what I'm talking about yet but will try to explain my thought process based on what I've read so far.
I haven't yet decided on ammo. I had read elsewhere that for heavier bullets, a 1:10 would be preferable in this cartridge, and considering...
Bummer, wanting to get something sooner. I may go to 300 win mag instead since 1:10 looks to already be available. Unlikely I'd want to shoot anything with a longer COAL anyhow which was the primary reason I was considering the WSM
Any findings on a particular way to source a 1:10in? Can sportsmans take an order for this specifically or do you have to just keep checking until you find one?
^helpful. Thanks. I seem to have been getting conflicting information regarding this
Appreciate the pointer. I can make it about anywhere. I’ve got no problem driving and fortunately have a pretty flexible schedule allowing me to devote a fair amount of time. Looks like that area sees a decent number of bears harvested so your tip makes sense.
Appreciate the input, interesting how valuable those acorns can be to them and how quick it happens. Is this western Sierra you’ve done this? Any certain time of day they seemed more active? Also if you don’t mind, i haven’t hunted in CA before, is public land pretty crazy around deer season opener?
Listened to his podcast with Mike Costello. Seth of black bear pursuit seems to have a major focus on mule deer, but I’ll have to look through there and see what I can find on bears as well. He seems to be a bit further north than me but if I do any hunting on the western foothills I’m sure his...
Listened to the Huntin ain’t easy podcast series on black bear. Here is what stuck out to me. Do these track with everyone? Anything major missing? I’m out of Bakersfield so plan to hunt the Sierras, probably spend some time both on east and west side.
Bear are much more adaptable than many...
I look for 3 things
1- success- If I am unlikely to be successful, I can just go sit in the woods without an outfitter lol
2- price- I, like I imagine most hunters, do have some sort of budget. Many outfitters don't show price on their site, and if thats the case I leave the site and keep...
