Many of you know Larry Bartlett of Pristine Ventures in Fairbanks. He presented at the AK SCI last weekend on a study he helped conduct at the University of Alaska Fairbanks last summer regarding caloric expenditures and caloric intake on backcountry hunts. I was unable to attend in person, so I...
I've been really impressed with the Muck arctic sport boots. So much so that I find myself wearing them instead of my "bunny boots" for winter activities here in AK, even at our cabin in the interior. Never been cold in them, despite temps down to -30. Walking in snow and slush or ice fishing. I...
Yep, I like them. I don't always used them, but try to be sure I do when skinning bears or doing detail work like taking the face off capes, etc. I was really careful to use them while I was pregnant. As others said the nitrile dipped ones are great, and I like using rubber gloves over the top.
Yep. Trust me, when you are a short person it makes a big difference! The key is to adjust the tripod for the shortest viewer from the get go, even the tallest can look down into an angled spotter without much trouble. Adjust it too tall and the shortest won't be able to see and you end up...
This is exactly my system for backpack hunts too. Merino t shirt, merino long sleeve, windshirt to cut the breeze hiking, puffy and rainshell. Ideally the puffy will fit under the rainshell, although it's very rare for me to actually hike in the puffy.
I will say I have been wearing my Sitka...
Another plus to the angled spotter is its easier to share between viewers of multiple heights. I am 5'3, and nearly always hunt with folks taller than me. I can get an animal in an angled spotter and taller viewers can look down into an angled spotter to see...straight spotter makes it much...
I think this might absolutely be true. The volume of blood that comes out of frozen quarters when you thaw them is impressive. Have done it several times with caribou, and the meat quality afterwards was awesome.
No personal experience, but I have heard duraflames burn so hot they can burn thru ultralight stoves. We ususally cut them into thirds or quarters and use them just to get the other wood going.
Not trying to rain on your parade if you want an excuse to buy a new handgun, but I wouldn’t carry both if I was already rifle hunting. In fact we’ve done a number of hike in caribou hunts where two hunters shared one rifle between them. Same with summer backpack trips for interior grizzly...
I get headaches if I don’t have the right firmness and “elevation” pillow. I sewed up some flannel bags with zippers, and stuff my puffy coat and or pants into them at night. The weight of the empty bag is minimal and I have the perfect pillow every time. Been using this happily for about a...
Depending on the shape it might be ok. The beauty of the pyramid shaped nest is you can set it up anywhere under the floor less shelter with stakes for the 4 corners, and a single attachment point at the top. We frequently pitch our floor less shelters with 2 trekking poles instead of a center...
I'm a natural pb fan, and really like the Justin's PB packets for backpacking. They have a couple varieties, including one with honey mixed in. Great on crackers or tortillas, or straight out of the packet.
Some good thoughts here. I relate to what you are describing because I feel like I have just gotten better at the target acquisition and getting set up for the shot piece in the last few years. I didn't grow up hunting at all, and only fired a gun for the first time after I got married. Actually...
I love floorless shelters for the increased space to weight ratio, and bc it’s great to be able to come in muddy or bloody and not have to worry about taking everything off outside.
I also prefer to sleep in a bugproof area with a floor. The solution for us has been a 2 person “nest” with...
It’s true! She’s already way tougher than me, and loves to be “OUTSIDE”. Excited for adventures with her in 2019. She will make her 3rd trip to kodiak (well, besides the 2 trips while I was pregnant) when we go chase brown bears in May.
I find I am notching fewer tags myself these days, the bigger priority is on getting our daughter Molly out on trips and helping other people do more of the tag filling. I can't complain as I still logged around 70 days in the field for 2018, our freezers are full, and we have done nearly all of...
Yeah, hangers are what we use. Double wrap the Velcro tab around the neck of the hanger if needed to keep it from slipping. Quilts I just snap around the hanger. Our Wiggy’s bags don’t have a Velcro closure, so I cinch the drawstring a little to keep them on hangers.
Retail style pants hangers...
This is the back of the gear room door, I bought a clear shoe rack and use it to store misc small stuff. Everything from cameras and chargers, gps, havalon blades, paracord, lighters, etc.
Here's what I did with ours. The totes are labeled, one has cookstoves/pots/water bladders, another sleeping pads, another pack raft gear, and another game bags.
The small drawers have things like instant coffee, drink mixes and snack bars. The cardboard boxes are mostly dehydrated entrees, I...
