Nothing wrong with posting people at the intersection. If they were not there, lots of folks on dirt bikes would simply drive around the sign or cable, should one be installed. I'm just saying that people hired to communicate with the public should speak English.
I think I see where you're coming from, but in my opinion, if someone hired to communicate with the public in America doesn't know the English language, they are not doing their job. Not at all their fault in the case - it's the agency that hired them and put them in that position.
How was I a jerk? Asking politely about fire conditions? Expecting people hired to interact with the public to communicate in English? They were nice folks, probably from India or Pakistan, just shouldn't have been put into such a situation by their employer.
This is the most likely explanation, in my view. They were nice enough fellows, and I didn't want to push it, just wondered if my favorite local hunting area was burned up.
Could be right, that road is very well traveled, especially after one along a river nearby was recently closed to motorized traffic. They were nice enough fellows, I imagine they would get lots of questions.
It's not a closed area. It's an FS road intersecting the Banks Lowman road, which is open. The FS road itself is closed temporarily - well marked, but I was just asking the security guards about conditions.
Bring one of these and an extra wipe with two gallon zip bag to seal. Just put it in your backpack.

Not a rant against the forest service, and I get that they need to economize by contracting out security at road closures in fire areas, but geez, is it too much to ask that at least one of the security team speak English? Our exchange went something like this:
"Hello! The road has to be...
Jeep Wrangler Sport S here, with Warne winch, rock rail and step ups, and a roof rack. Works great for me and my wife. Kind of a challenge to get my kayak on top but otherwise just fine. Can't sleep in it though. Need to bring cots and a tent.
For years, Cliff bars were all I ever brought with me, hiking, bouldering, hunting, whatever. Then suddenly I couldn't stand them anymore. So last few times have not brought anything; just stop for bad stuff like candy or other snacks on the way.
We will always need to work. And "AI" cannot "do" anything. It's an algorithm (neural net, to be precise) that was designed and implemented by humans to respond to input. As always, humans develop and implement fundamental and advanced engineering and architectural principles and procedures...
Ok, but as an engineer, I cannot agree with refusing to implement technology to protect the status quo. Using this logic, we would not have computer-aided design, computerized medicine, electronic engine control systems, and a host of other features that have improved our quality of life over...
Just about to scout my favorite hunting locale in SW Idaho today. Unfortunately, much of it appears to have been burned. I've read that deer tend to return to burned out areas rather quickly, and that the new clearings created often result in more browse for both deer and elk. Hopefully this...
I don't get the point here. Any programmer can change source code to get whatever result they want. The issue is accessing the source code in the first place and then implementing the changed code somewhere in the official tabulation process.
