    2024 CO Mule Deer w/7mm-08 Fusion 120gr

Congrats, that's an awesome buck! Couldn't agree more on the second shot. Similar thing happened to me this year, first shot broadside likely would have done it but I could still see him after 30 yards or so when he stopped and stood, so I put a second one in him. Lost some meat with it being a...

    Neck shot ethics

Yeah the only data point I can add here is in between a rodeo and a solid drop. A cow I shot in 2022 I was above it shooting pretty steep downhill but only maybe 100 yds linear distance. Aimed vitals but slightly high because of the angle, come to find out I either directly or nearly directly...

    Neck shot ethics

I've heard similar that it's a clean shot and will drop them right away, but for me it always comes down to my comfort level of range and the shot I can for sure make. I think I'd only take it if I had a solid rest within 100 and couldnt see vitals/knew i wouldn't, but also there's so much good...

How often do you find unrecovered animals?

I found a cow this year in first rifle CO, first time in 5 years I've stumbled across a critter but im sure more to come. She was shot on opening day and I found it the morning of day 2. We crossed paths with the guy who shot it on our hike in that morning, chatted and he said he was unable to...

Any old gun gurus out there?

I appreciate this! Just reached out to Ian, I will see what he says about the rifle and it's markings, would be awesome to learn a bit more about it.

Lem vs Meat your maker vacuum sealer

I'm curious how LEM, MEAT, vacmaster, etc all compare to the basic foodsaver ? Is foodsaver generally on the lower end of vac sealers people use? I have a foodsaver from when i lived back east and pretty much ran a whitetail through it per year. Ever since ive been running bigger critters and...

Any old gun gurus out there?

yeah here's a slightly better view of that primer which is also the first time I've ever seen it protruding like that. I appreciate the insight on the various reasonings for the punch marks, not far off of what I was thinking but it may be hard to ever truly know for all of them. Definitely a...

Any old gun gurus out there?

Yep, this one did come out of the Springfield armory early on, and does fall in that category based on SN. That's one of the reasons I'm retiring it but also just looking to get something a little more modern and step up my shooting game and effective range a bit.

Any old gun gurus out there?

Hey all, just curious if there's any old gun or old military gun gurus out there that might have might know a thing or two about my old Springfield 1903 or might have some more resources i can poke around on. I don't know much about it other than it was manufactured in 1906 based on SN...

    Colorado flat tops situation?

Realized I never followed up here but went out for second rifle mule deer both weekends (didn't hunt the weekdays due to my PTO situation). First weekend, 10/26 I started out lower saw a couple does and fawns opening morning but with no snow on the ground it was very clear the bucks were way...

    Reflections on 2024 Elk Hunt

My experience has been that rather than worry about on-trail/off-trail, figure out the best way to get into good looking country. I've definitely had a few off trail 'walks' that after i finished i thought "man, that was a waste of calories" and i've had some trails run right through prime...

    The Deer Aging Thread

I bought a cheap fridge from an estate sale, modified it with $13 of all thread and bolts from home depot and a few drilled holes (silicone re-sealed) and this is working pretty nicely! I've always thought about aging but mainly did this as a method to just be able to slowly process it and not...

    Second season Colorado reports

Got out of the truck at the TH at 10k to about a foot of snow. I don't know much about what the big old crusty bucks do but I had a feeling the does (and hopefully smaller bucks) weren't sticking around in that so I made a last minute decision and went to plan b, dropped down to about 9k, still...

    Second season Colorado reports

I know theres a million and 1 factors that affect this answer but just curious, what kind of snow depths are you seeing deer in still? I'm heading back up this weekend, gonna go as high as I can but going in somewhat blind as far as what to expect with the snow. The deer I saw last weekend were...

    Second season Colorado reports

The unit I was in last weekend didn't see or hear of a buck below 11k, but go above 11k and there were bucks around. Still didn't seem interested in does from what I saw. I'm really hoping this weather this week fires them up, heading back up this weekend. Meanwhile, this guy was in my...

    Colorado flat tops situation?

To the earlier comments of no snow, it's there now...I was up there scouting last weekend and the snow is definitely there in the high country, not sure how deep, I didn't venture up that high but could see it from down low. ( Sat image is from yesterday, 10/22. green X is Sheep Mtn and red X is...
