338 Win Mag - How short of a barrel? Suppressed or unsuppressed?

I don't use a .338 but a relative of mine does and they have struggled to get factory ammo for their .338 Winchester. Just something to think about before you go too far with this project. I might consider a 300 Win Mag or something similar.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

For the sake of arguement... at what distance does a .223 create a wound equivalent to an arrow wound, assuming an appropriate bullet is used? I doubt I could shoot that far reliably.

Trust me we'll be careful. I've yet to let a kid take a shot at a grizzly with anything. My rule currently is I won't let a kid shoot a grizzly until they have successfully shot a black bear without excessive jitters. I know of two right now who could do it. Another shot a black bear but was so...

Relatively few bears get that big. And you can subtract about 4 inches of fluff all around each bear. The fur makes the torso look a lot bigger then it really is. But a real trophy bear probably has the widest chest of anything except a bison. Remember I'm an adult use your brain if you go...

    Sleeping bag for +6’6”

I have an Enlightened Equipment quilt I really like. Down will last longer so its a better investment in my opinion. EE does custom work so they could do something for a taller guy. And they have done sleeping bags (even though I like their quilts).

    Alaska Draw Results

Nothing, nothing for my son or any of the kids I mentor. We were hoping for a local antlerless moose tag. Oh well. Time to focus on bears and bull moose.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Yes I reload. Haven't had time to lately with family obligations so I'll probably run factory ammo for everything except hunting/site in loads for the .223. I stocked up on good 6.5 Grendal ammo and .308 ammo already.

Yeah, I've generally heard going lighter on ARs tends to introduce more complications. If I'm making a semi auto AR I'd keep it fairly conventional because I'd want to be 100% reliable if I ticked of a grizzly. If I really wanted to trim weight I'd consider one of the manually operated ARs with...

    Banff vs Glacier

Both are nice. But Banff and Jasper are prettier and you can probably get away from crowds easier.

Looking like I might have a .223 to try out. This should be fun. Hopefully my 2nd suppressor is out of jail too. If it works as advertised I might start building one of those ultralight ultralight ARs.

Okay here would be the plan for a brown/grizzly bear this spring. I'm heavily involved with Cross Trail Outfitters which is basically a Christian mentoring program for young men via hunting and fishing trips. They do some great work if anyone is interested in helping out or sending a kid on a...

Juan and Atmal thanks for the generous offers. A 16 in tikka would be perfect. I'm driving to work but I'll get a schedule asap and we can see if it would work for either of you.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

I'm interested in a brown/grizzly bear. Trouble is I have a 6.5 Grendal I really like and a .308 I really like. I'd love to try a grizzly with either. The only. 223 rifles we have feel kinda "meh" in comparison (generic ARs we inherited) and none have a solid Trijicon or SWFA scope on them. But...

    Grizzly’s or not?

Definatey Grizzly. I'm leaning towards a moma with three cubs since they seem similar in size. Unless they ran two different directions afterwards. I get the feeling Yellowstone is one of the easier areas to be grizzly. I did see a black bear mom with three cubs once. It can happen.

    Silencer recommendation for whitetail hunting

I was just shopping for a suppressor. It would appear that the Evo Harvester might be discontinued. I think I saw it discounted a bit in one or two places (maybe to move old stock?). I ended up going with a different one. If you like the Evo you might want to grab one while they are still around.

    Charging bear/timed shooting drill

I was the one who filmed it. Seemed to work okay, but a bit cumbersome to put the video in editing software and visually look for the sound spikes and measure the time. Trying to stay within my budget (grad school and all that fun stuff).

    Charging bear/timed shooting drill

Just saw there are phone apps for shot timers. Do they work?

    Charging bear/timed shooting drill

Yeah no offense taken. I see the value of doing this cold but I'm not going to waste more ammo till I do dry firing for a week or so to get my rhythm down. The two AR hits were bottom of the 8 inch (I think one in, one just out) but reasonably close together. The 308 hits were about 4 inches...

    Charging bear/timed shooting drill

If my calculation is right (don't have shot clock yet) I'm at 2.02 for two shots from the AR and 3.09 for two from the .308. That is from the beginning of the sound wave (on the video editor) when my son yells "bear" to the second shot. I don't want to even talk about my groups. More "accurate"...

Smaller Bore Match Bullets for Brown Bear or Moose (and other big critters)

Well I tried the bear charge drill and my second shot time with the A15 6.5 Grendal is noticeably faster then my bolt action 308. I need a shot timer for real numbers but it was clearly faster. Manipulating the bolt is the hang up (duh). I can improve on that but onlyto a point. I don't have my...
