I'm debating between a Hydrogen K which I believe us about 5.5 inches and 7.4 oz (with a direct thread ti mount) and a Enticer S which would be 6.75 inches and 9.4 oz. Either would improve on my old Huntertown Arms Kestrel (26 oz and 9 inches believe).
Any thoughts? I like the shorter can but...
I've only shot two grizzly bears. First was a single broadside hit. Second wasa broadside followed up very quickly with a head shot. I didn't do a full autopsy but both side hits stopped under the hide. Wounds appeared wide. Smaller animals like caribou had smaller wounds from the 375 but always...
I use a 10mm because I think it's the most practical handgun for that role. I'd take a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor over it any day of the week if I had a choice though. What I wonder is if the increased power of a bigger rifle is necessary with today's bullets. I think I'd feel fine taking a broadside...
Okay I’ve read the 223 thread (I think I read it all, it took a while). I’m convinced the .223 will do the job for normal big game hunting in the US.
Now, I hunt grizzlies in Alaska and always used a .375 Ruger. It has a 16 inch barrel and I’ve downloaded it a bit (260 grain Nosler Partition...
Thegman I'd feel better if my bear had survived. But another very real possibility is that a grizzly finished it off. From a game camera I later learned a grizzly mother and cubs were about 100 yards away while I was crawling around the bushes looking for blood trails. A bit creepy.
Merry...
Yes most definitely. Before I understood bear anatomy I hit a black bear too far forward on the shoulder (bear vitals are a bit farther back compared to a deer). The bear rolled over and ran off. There was even a nice blood trail. But I never found that bear. I looked till dark then tried some...
The problem with the 6.8 SPC is that ammo seems harder to find. I do handload but lately family obligations mean I tend to grab factor ammo whenever I can. 6.5 Grendal ammo is relatively easy to find and I'd probably stock up once with enough for a couple seasons.
The 358 has been fun but I'm not sure I'd build another one. After watching the 223 and 6.5 threads I'm not convinced it will do anything that a 308 won't do with better long range ballistics and more ammo and reloading options. Now if I was only using harder bullets like Nosler Partitions I...
I never heard a bullet smack but we did use a suppressed 308 for a couple bears over bait. It was nice because you could hear the bears crashing off. We also tried electric ear muffs on a non suppressed 358 and got similar results. We had a very good idea where the bears dropped. That 358 makes...
I was wondering about the 6.5 Grendal too. I have no doubt it would work, after all we have a huge thread about the 223 working on big game. My question is this; is the 6.5 Grendal more likely to create an exit wound?
I did a bit of math and the recoil of a 7.25 pound 224 rifle would be roughly...
The big thing that might change my mind would be someone convincing me that a .223 will drop things FASTER to make that blood trail a moot point. But like I said earlier, I will probably try a .223 for spring bear. We don't need a .223 because the kids I take out do just fine with my 308...
Any idea how much weight was saved? Or just how heavy it is now? Looks like something I might try.
I found some TMKs and ordered 200. My family has some 223 rifles laying around. Hopefully try the TMKs this spring. I'm still a but hesitant though. Can anyone comment on whether a 6.5 Grendel or...
After going through this thread there is no doubt a 223 would be great for the kids I take hunting in Alaska.
I really want to build a lightweight AR15 for Alaska hunts. It looks really practical. Hunt your caribou or whatever. Add a tactical light if you're carrying meat out in bear country...
Yeah blood trails are nice where we bear hunt. Some of the death runs described here would probably result in a lost bear if there was no blood to follow. Just really thick brush. I'll probably stick with my 308 for those. Might be overkill but our longest run was maybe 50 yards. Most were...
I believe Last Frontier might be shut down. If they are, I have Rick at Extreme Rifle Works doing work on my 375 Ruger. Based on our conversations he seems like a guy who could do similar work if you are wanting to do a ultralight kimber (or anything else).
Okay so this is a bit off topic but somewhat related. I'm heavily invested in a 308 rifle (ammo, reloading components etc) and it shots very well. Based on what we know from the 223 what would be the best way to maximize the 308s performance if I decided to run with it for everything including...
Selling a Trijicon Huron 2.5-10x40 scope. I put it on a 30-06 and sighted it in but never carried it in the field. Asking $425 TYD. Shipping from AK is included. I put an identical scope on another rifle and it was phenomenal.
I have a pair of Zamberlan 1996 boots with minimal use. I tried them walking around and just prefer a more minimal shoes. They are in great shape and appear well made. Size is 9 or 44 Euro. Asking $275 to your door (shipping from Alaska).
