IMO, the large LCP gives you a little more room as a day pack for gear. The Sherman alone could fill up quickly. It all depends upon how much gear you bring with you. Personally I would take the LCP over the Sherman for the role you're describing.

One option would be to look into what moving equipment you might be able to rent. Some places have the stair climbing dollys available.

The OP said he didn't want a bushing die. Whidden doesn't make a 300 WSM die unless it's a custom die. LE Wilson only makes a 300 WSM bushing die.
