I think there are a number of studies in this area, and even more “bro science.” It’s easy to dismiss the studies - not enough time (12 weeks?); running “injuries”, like expressing pain, not indicative of whether there’s a long-term benefit, etc. This is one of the areas where I doubt there’s...
Mt warden can reply, but there should be no issue with zone 2 and lifting in the same day. Strength work and zone 2 work rests different adaptations, so they’re generally not going to interfere with one another. If there is interference, you’re typically lifting too heavy (progressing too fast)...
This is addressed in the podcast. Yes, it feels too easy. But the only way to build the aerobic system is nudging it up from below. You can't pull it up from above. As you build up your aerobic system, you'll be able to move faster and faster at aerobic-level effort (lower heartrate). But it...
Yes, yes, and yes. You can go as in-depth about this as you want, but I think the real key is consistency and sustainability (low-intensity). Basically, I do zone 2/aerobic training in the morning, every morning, 5-7 days a week. Strength training and other hunting-specific training (shooting...
I don't know that we can definitively say whether "we're doing it wrong" or "we're doing it right." I think we can say that one should not take at face value the assertion that a stiff, high, waterproof boot 1) provides "more support" than other options; 2) will keep your feet warmer than other...
There’s a discussion of CrossFit/hiit versus more “traditional” endurance-based training in this podcast. No need to rehash too much, but i wouldn’t disagree with what folks say above, perhaps noting that, for me, building an aerobic base primarily trail running, with a muscular endurance block...
Badlands has one. I have the RYO and the Badlands (received as a gift). I go back and forth between the two. Currently back on board with the RYO - more minimal, can strap it down tighter, realized that I could clip on rangefinder with a clove hitch (duh).
Badlands is a bit less tight to the...
This guy has to be trolling. The French toast? Elaborate making of French toast, in the daylight, as the opening scene to an elk hunting video? Lapping up the drips of pure maple syrup? C’mon. A+ troll. Slightly more subtle Hank Peterson.
No to derail, but I've shifted drastically along these lines. I used to run without fuel for up to 18 miles and think about how much that had improved my ability to operate on fat. (And, of course, think about how "tough" I was.) But in races, I was cramming down swedish fish and gels like...
This discusses your precise scenario, I think. (Minus the age component.)
It seems that the ideal plan would include a solid aerobic base, gained from months of low intensity running or hiking; high level of general strength, gained from months of general weight lifting (compound movements...
I thought I had seen this, and turns out I'm not crazy. Some folks are moving away from advocating fasted workouts. Just posting for everyone's information and consideration. Basically, it looks like the consensus at Uphill Athlete is to move away from recommending fasted workouts, but Scott...
I question these numbers. Ultra runners typically cover 40-80 miles a week. By those numbers these runners would be buying new shoes every two weeks. For me, it’s more like like 250-300 miles, some less, some more. At a minimum, perhaps take those numbers as the very low end of the scale.
Not trying to start a debate, but you’ve opted for hard work over a medical (or quasi-medical) intervention; that’s almost always a great choice. At a minimum, you’ll enhance discipline, increase knowledge about yourself and nutritions, and come away a more capable person than before. Well done...
Not to derail the thread too much, but how do you like those EB pants? I’ve been looking at them but never pulled the trigger. Would be interested in the weight/thickness, effectiveness of vents, and the fit.
Agree with all of the above. Regarding shoes, I prefer to have a few on hand to rotate through. Usually one “traditional” road shoe, one big padded shoe (hoka or arctyrex norvan ld) and one light shoe, usually a trail shoe. I never buy all at once - I just scan runners warehouse clearance shoes...
I have the Rab Electron Pro. I'm a medium in everything, and a medium in this jacket. It fits great. I can layer underneath, including with a down vest, but there's not a lot of extra fabric.
I really like the jacket, in part because of the trim fit. Rab stuff fits me really well, including...
