New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

Hey MatukaJoe, Form did weigh in on this discussion (probably on page 2) and says that between .223, 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm and .308 the same model of bullet will create wound channels that are almost indistinguishable from small to large calibers even though the weight and size of the bullets are so...

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

One of things I've found most interesting in comparing the content and opinions from Form and Barsness is how much their "old school" and "new school" opinions alignt. In one of Barsness's chapters in he Gun Gack books he literally says that recoil negatively affects almost everyone's accuracy...

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

I agree with the nitpicking and obsession part. I am just appreciative that others are willing to play these "stupid human tricks" with me as I'm in no hurry to finish this build and enjoy the mental gymnastics. I've learned a ton from going through these kinds of deep analysis and appreciate...

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

Thanks, I have been using Nosler's reloading data to come up with my capacity and speeds. I've taken the average "max" of the various powders tried and then deducted 50 fps per inch from the test barrel listed to get to approximate 18" barrel speeds. Not super accurate, but I feel that the...

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

Ah, I sound like I've made my mind up,, but I'm easily influenced! :) I've attached my spreadsheet analysis of various cartridges. The 6.5x55 Swede seems a bit on the slow side but I do really like the idea of the 6.5-06, 6.5-284 and the .25-06 Rem. These three would allow me to use the long...

Interesting, and a bit of a bummer on the accuracy side. I do wonder if that 1:7 is too fast. I'd be interested for you to try a heavier bullet and see the results. Hammer makes both a 100 and a 104 grain bullet and it would be interesting to run the 95 grain Barnes LRX through the same system...

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

Great info on the barrel, I will lean this way for sure. And probably won't bother with fluting.. I am coming up with a rough initial weigh of 8.5 pounds (with scope and suppressor) which I do want to get down a bit. I'd go carbon as my other 2 builds have been proof carbon, but I want to use...

Thanks, I mistook that Hammer made a slightly heavier bullet. Wondering if the 1/7 twist instead of the 1/7.5 hurts performance with a lighter (95 gr.) bullet?

Thanks for your thoughts and for the load info. This is going to be the gun build that makes me reload.. So I'm a newb when it comes to load development.

Okay- follow up questions as I plan this build. Quick review — I’ve got an old tikka t3 30-06 that I intend to rebuild. Goals are light backpacking build, 600 yard max range, mono metal. It will be used with a suppressor. Likely my 5.5” 7.8 oz banish backcountry. Per the input from you all...

Thanks for the load data for DRT. Wish we had a source for consistent and rigorous testing of these various bullets in gel to aid in knowing their performance at various velocities I guess we will just have to wait for the community to post necropsy results ! I hope to add my own very shortly.

I'm going to take my time with this one but if I had to pick tonight, I'd go with 6 CM and test Hammers, DRTs and LRX's for accuracy. Maybe also Controlled Chaos as that bullet has been incredibly accurate for me out of a 6.5 CM I just completed... then pick based on accuracy and Forms...

180ls1 said: I have a 7 twist 6.5 prc with 124 hammers pushed hard. It has worked very well on deer/elk and would be perfect for your use case. ---------------------- Nice! Have you ever found a recovered bullet or taken photos of...

Agreed, I've seen partial peeling performance with these bullets at even higher speeds than that. I built a .308 and shot animals with CX and Federal Trophy Copper at various distances out to 325 yards. Animals died, but out of the three recovered bullets I was able to retrieve, only one was...

Snap- thanks for that answer. Stunning as it is, I know there are a bajillion posts on Rokslide looking at autopsies and proving this out. Just haven't read them yet. Got it, thanks. Is the DRT needing high velocity to perform as do all the mono-metals? I can't find any minimum velocity...

Thanks for the thoughts. I did use 4dof and looked at three different mono copper loads and their ballistic performance out to 600 yards. It was easy to use 30-06 factory ammo since they have a 150, 165 and 180 grain gmx all loaded with superformance powders. Using Hornady's muzzle velocities...

Thanks for that, I bet you are right and didn't know that it was a full bolt swap. I'm used to Defiance with changeable bolt heads. This seems much easier!

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

Agreed, The concept of loading a 7mm-08 cartridge with really long bullets helps me understand what I'm really rying to ask in this thread. I guess what I'm really asking is, how much can a guy lean towards smaller cartridges (the Rokslide .223 angle,) when one is planning on using...

Thanks for confirming. Do you know how hard it is to swap bolt heads? I'd like to build this on my own. (no smith) as I enjoy the process of building.

that sounds like a good thing to investigate. I didin't come across the 6.5-o6 AI in my initial research. Thanks! I have a 280 AI that I love, so attracted to the concept! THANKS
