    Rich Man's Sport

I think they mean move to Oregon and Washington. There are no elk left in the Rockies.

2023 Official Western Hunting Expo thread

Anyone have a Maven discount code from the show? Waffled a bit too long and my code from Sportsmans expired...

Do you hit your dog ?

I have had Akitas for the last 25ish years. Almost every one of them, at some point when they are very young will bite me, to try and challenge me for the alpha spot. Every one of them, I've pinned down, and bit them on the ear until they cry, and stop struggling. Not one of them has ever...

    300 win mag ammo

The 200 Eld-X do fine with a 10-1 twist and are very accurate. They hammer elk. I have switched to the 190 ABLR when I can find them, they seem about perfect, but they are apparently made of unobtainium currently. Ballistics of the 2 are very close, definitely minute of elk under 500 yards...

    Tipi Hot Tent Spreadsheet

I've been looking hard at this setup myself, except I want to be able to run the stove with 2 adults and 2 kids with some hangout room, and probably a nest for the wife and youngest. Probably using ultralight backpacking cots too. 6 man Seek or a Redcliffe seems about perfect, but I keep...

Some friends asked us to meet them at Safari Club 2023 in Nashville, but??????

Stopped into Sportsmans Expo while it was in Denver because I got a free ticket. Only thing there worth my time to park was spending time talking to the guys at the Maven booth and test driving some binos. These things are pointless, unless you are there to go meet and greet outfitters. They...

.270 on whitetail - short range

Partitions are awesome for muleys. Using 150s because my rifle loves them. Never had one run more than 20', most drop like a sack of potatoes on the spot. But like many have said, it's a deer, they don't take much to kill. Whatever is cheap and readily available that your rifle likes.

    Elk Liver

Heart is delicious, gets eaten in camp or at the truck after a packout. But liver, I was completely ruined on it is a kid, won't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Too many memories of sitting at the table long after my parents were done trying to steel myself for one more bite of that nasty, pasty...

Colo Early Deer (rifle) is all Private Land Only?

Most likely, lots of PLO tags start early, offhand I think I can get unlimited C tags for my house that run from September to January, for both bucks and does. Alot of the early season tags you see could fall under this category as well.

    The Front Range

I live roughly 40 miles west of Denver, and on a good day, my commute is 50 minutes, on a bad day 2.5 hours... It is highly weather dependent and doesn't take much to make some of the roads pretty rough. That said, Lakewood isn't bad, assuming you would be working at the federal center. I...

    Optics During Archery Elk

Congratulations on getting it done your first time out! Upgrade to better 10x42s before a spotter. Finally getting ready to upgrade my 15 year old pair of Steiners and the 12x50 Mavens look great in the same size package as a 10x42-50.

    What bow is everyone shooting?

1st generation Matthews Helium, love it, haven't had any reason to replace it yet. Started with a Parker Hunter Mag. Killed my first elk with an ancient Bear compound my dad gave when I got started, probably shot about 150 fps.... tops.

Turnkey cost poll for successful DIY elk hunters - All about the Benjamin's?

I've been hunting elk for 25+ years and in that time, after the initial few years of tag soup (which I hunted with a hand me down bow/ rifle, army surplus and already owned backpacking gear), I meet your criteria for success. Gear is bought on sale, and worn until it falls apart, or is passed...

CPW Commission is proposing ALL DRAW for elk

Not what I meant... But my point is, if there is heavy pressure in a particular area, doesn't mean every easy to draw tag is the same. My favorite unit has certain trailheads and drainages that are absolutely swamped with people, and those people tend to stick to the main trails, and not go...

CPW Commission is proposing ALL DRAW for elk

I understand your point of view on this, and I agree with your view on pressure, the pressure is out of hand, during certain seasons, and in easier to access areas. In other, easy to draw, and OTC areas, there is no pressure, because the terrain is more challenging, or there are other things...

    Broncos Player Kills Mountain Lion.

That is probably the biggest cat I've ever seen, and that area is not that far from my house. We are over run with cats right now, and they are killing dogs and livestock consistently in the area. Good for him, dogs or no, that is an accomplishment. Beautiful animal, look at the size of it's...

CPW Commission is proposing ALL DRAW for elk

So, you are working to reduce your own opportunities to hunt every year, because you can't draw the best tags in the state? I don't love the current PP system, would rather see something like a weighted draw for the top tier units, so there is at least some chance of drawing them for anyone...

Who wears rubber gloves to clean game ?

These are the ones I use, Milwaukee makes a similar pair, they are great, I actually wear them during the early seasons as a general glove sometimes. Stabbed myself enough times wrestling critters on muddy hillsides to not have a bit of cut protection. Keep a couple pairs of the mechanics...
