    Packing out a Whitetail

This was on private in Texas and beat dragging the deer 300ish yards to the road. Wouldn’t do this on public and have always put orange on the antlers when packing on public.

Undecided SO DST tarp or Kifaru sheep tarp

No experience with the sheep tarp but have spent many nights under a DST. Agreed with the square shape being preferred.

Crispi Nevada vs Salomon Quest 4 D

I have 2 pair of Salomon’s and they are very comfortable but the lack of waterproof-ness is a deal breaker for me on future boots. Morning dew will completely soak through those boots.

Anyone wear just a merino sock?

Once I learned that more socks doesn’t always equal more warmth, and I started wearing merino, I haven’t worn double-socks since.

    Solomon 4D flex rating?

I have the 4D and the mids; packed out 2 CO elk this season in the 4Ds. The 4Ds are noticeably more stiff than the mids. I’d put them at a 3 and 2 respectively. I have a pair of Crispi Hunters that are a 4 and they are like walking in a ski boot with how stiff the rocker is. Neither Salomon pair...

    Montana big game combo points.

I believe MT averages points and y’all would be applying with 2.5 preference points. (PPs are for combo license and BP for limited entry tags).

Has anyone been shot at while hunting?

Have been shot over but not shot at. While antelope hunting, we located a group of antelope around 2 miles away on top of a mesa that was only accessible via 2-3 chutes/rock slides in the south cliffside. The rest of the mesa was either landlocked by private or had 20-50' vertical cliffs. We...

Muzzle brake on a backpack rifle (300 win mag)?

For me it was a a few rapid fire rounds of .357 magnum, and it felt like I had a cotton ball in my left ear for 3-4 days. Sounded like I was hearing under water, and still does to an extent. The broken speaker reference makes perfect sense to me. To the OP, get a suppressor if it’s in the...

    2022 Lessons Learned - Elk

South slopes with good cover can hold elk. Let the bull walk past you more than 10 yards before trying to draw. It’s possible to be more efficient with a light pack covering 8-10 miles a day and eating a ‘truck meal’ than it is carrying camp on your back and eating mtn house for 5 days straight.

    Cleaning Old Skulls

Truthfully, I’ve never done it but know others who have. I would expect a few weeks. I’ve heard you don’t want to completely change all of the water as you’ll be restarting the bacteria build up process. Mine aren’t perfect but I get them pretty white before ever doing any chemical whitening...

    Cleaning Old Skulls

If your issue is the skull is yellowing with grease, it’s not necessarily due to poor whitening on the original process, but due to not getting all the grease out. Over time, the grease comes out of the interior bone towards the surface and results in the yellowing your seeing. Remove the grease...

    Cleaning Old Skulls

I was going to say the same about the aquarium heater. @NYSKIER You can also use the heater and Dawn soap to further degrease your skulls. To whiten them, I make a paste with volume 40 peroxide and whitening powder, both ordered from Sally’s Beauty Salon. I haven’t combo’d peroxide in the water...

    Dog ACL injury

My 2.5 yr old lab is on week 4 of recovering from her ACL surgery. It was the TPLO. She is doing better than most dogs which the vet said she expected due to her age; toughest part currently is keeping her relaxed enough to not want to run around every where. I was told by several folks to...
