I use fixed 4x and 6x scopes quite often. They are light and sturdy. Unless shooting 500 yards or further, there really isn’t any need for more than 6x. The scopes people are lugging around these days are ridiculous. Adding 2lb of scope and mounts to a 6lb rifle doesn’t make a lot of sense...
I don’t know if anyone is basing their opinion on old ballistic tips vs the ones over the last ten years....but the newer ones are actually pretty tough. They have much thicker jackets now, especially for bore sizes 7mm and larger.
Here are some pics of what I use. I saw someone mentioned a UBL. I never like them because they tend to dig into stuff when you sit. This rig flexes and follows your leg angle. That may not be a concern for you depending on how you hunt.
I wear a Safariland 6004-25 thigh rig while on duty. This is not Blackhawk! junk. It is semi-rigid and rides higher. I’m able to sprint with it without having the gun flop around. Advantages include easier access, muzzle control through the draw stroke, and you can go prone with it...
This will sound really unconventional....
Last December, we had a big snow storm and I ran out of Copenhagen. I have young children and I refused to drag them to the store with all the idiots driving around like....idiots, just so I could feed my habit. I was miserable for a week. I also...
In my previous post, I wasn’t trying to be biased, but the CA just feels like a better rifle. At least to me. It may not have the engineering innovation compared to Tikka, but I think its a nicer rifle. Just like a 1911 may be old tech vs a Glock, but.....
One issue that caused most of the problems was a bad batch of springs. If you have a roll pin punch, a small hammer, and opposable thumbs, you can fix it in about 3 minutes. Assuming you drop the spring and have to look for it for a minute.
I have both. The CA feels like a higher quality gun. It should at the cost difference. With a 700 footprint, it’s also easy to get parts that are compatible. In a long action, it offers greater OAL latitude than a Tikka. The opposite is true for “short action” cartridges since the Tikka...
