    .308 and Elk hunting..

Yeah, better go with a .223 and avoid a shoulder replacement in later years.

    Different bullets for cow elk

In the grand scheme if it's good enough (rifle/handgun/bullet) for a cow elk to feel confident it will kill it, the same thing would happen to a bull elk with the same shot combination. The difference in the proper/same bullet reaching the vital area is not enough to shake a stick at. If it...

    Different bullets for cow elk

I was using that term loosely, but I don't doubt there are folks that would be hesitant to shoot something based on what they've heard. No heartburn received or intended, just small calibers are highly promoted and I do think they compromise ability for different shot angles and thus shot...

    Different bullets for cow elk

338 Win is a pretty versatile cartridge, and I agree the larger expanded frontal diameter is a noticeable difference in animal reaction at impact. IMO, yes it's a great choice for a cow. A lead cow will go 500 lbs, not small and the same material makes their flesh and bones as a bull that may...

    Different bullets for cow elk

Cows and Does are here for the same reasons bucks and bulls are here and they die the same way with same cartridges when the goal is take them as cleanly as possible. Should not be any difference on choice of cartridge or shot placement. What is the hunt called when hunting bulls? That's not a...

Gun for Elk Hunting in Thick Timber

Reality is a good bullet that can handle penetration from any reasonable angle in this day and age is more important than the outright the diameter (caliber). I'm partial to larger calibers because I've used a .358 diameter bullet for over 22 years. Previous to that I was in the camp of the...

Gun for Elk Hunting in Thick Timber

Lol, thought you were referencing the 35 Whelen/AI. 358 Win is an amazing round. I've been in the field for 30+ years with a lot of close friends shooting all manner of cartridges and calibers and seen 40+ elk on the ground. There is nothing more decisive on hard angle shots at short range...

    Hammer Hunter on Game Performance

If you want to take pictures, and be part of the club, use a frangible bullet and document it. If you wanna kill an animal just as dead, not worry about lost meat, take hard angle shots with confidence, but not be part of the club, using copper works great. I've probably been using them as long...

    Hammer Hunter on Game Performance

Thanks for the report and pic. Does baseball size exit hole mean that was the size of the hole in the hide to match the wounding under the hide in the pic? If you had centered the lungs (which you were most likely wanting to do) and there was no damage to the heart would you be disappointed to...

Why are bullets frequently found just under the hide on the opposite side?

I get it, I'm playing a bit of the devils advocate here. No argumentative intentions intended. You found the animals, and didn't make mention a small exit was an issue with respect to finding the animals with the copper bullets. You do mention the 175 grain Partition above. Yes, Partitions...

Why are bullets frequently found just under the hide on the opposite side?

Barnes bullets with copper petals cut tissue. They don't bludgeon it. Of course they will be more prone to exit cleanly and with a less impressive hole. At what point in the animals death did a small exit hole have a negative affect?

    Elk shot placement

The red X isn't going to ruin much with a bullet meant to hold together. The demise of the controlled expansion bullet around here is highly exaggerated. Frangible bullets make for bloody pics and lost meat.

    Mono metal discussion

Congrats! Same kind of performance you get from most copper bullets, whether they shed pedals or maintain weight.

Anyone know which bullet this is?

Partitions are a great bullet. I've had good accuracy and on-game success with them in a 300 Win, 280 Rem, 270 Win. So you are glad you didn't buy more Partions because you had those, or because you didn't want a Partiton?

    Why Match/Target Bullets For Hunting

Very true, environmental issues drive things. I started using copper long before that as you've seen in other threads. I've no hesitation with it and good/great success. That lead is now an environmental issue only makes me more confident from experience when lead gets put by the wayside.

    Why Match/Target Bullets For Hunting

I don't doubt bullets that "blow up" penetrate and make a clean kill, but why have a messy loss of meat when you don't have to? It's up to each guy to decide, and I'm all for that. 30 years of success and seeing 50+ elk taken (my own or others) with all manner of bullets answers that question...

    2024 Colorado Elk Elevations

Warm temps, winter coats growing back. Gotta stay cool. If warmer day temps continue into later Sept and October, winter coats keep growing and they will stay high or higher.

    ADG - reduce load

Agree. For the most part (exceptions exist, and exceptions are not common with respect to this), velocity = prsssure. Drop 10%, check velocity with a couple shots. Go from there. 1) the 10% reduction has been followed and 2) velocity tells the overall picture along combined with pressure...

    ADG - reduce load

    ADG - reduce load

My point was, it is standard reloading practice to reduce loads when changing any component, it doesn't matter what brass is being switched from or switched to, or who puts that in their literature. ADG is printing that to cover their bases. With your experience of reloading for decades, I...
