I'm 33 years old and I have two investment goals.
1) retirement: mostly vanguard stock index funds + 10% PHYS + 1% GBTC. I'm looking at alternatives to GBTC since it trades at discounts or premiums relative to it's underlying asset, BTC.
2) Saving for a real estate purchase here in KY (I want...
Interesting question. I've shot slick trick 100gr standards and vipers for years. I like them a lot. Haven't lost a deer yet. I've never noticed any sound issues, but then again I shoot a 15 year old bow with no string silencer. I do want to get a quieter set up.
I have a magma 15. I found it to be high quality, fairly packable, and at $300 2 years ago, good value. I've used it with a neoair xtherm when it was 20 degrees outside and i was super toasty. I wouldn't be afraid to camp at 0 degrees with that combo.
If you get the magna, I highly recommend...
Most canisters of bear spray last 5-10 seconds. The larger (10+ounces) cans could potentially be used to repel a bear twice. But then you're SOL . . . and bears are known to attack repeatedly as wounded hikers try to leave the scene.
I carry bear spray and a firearm because they're both...
I've put in for all three KY (resident) elk tags every year for 7 or 8 years. Still waiting . . .
Meanwhile I've caught the sheep bug. I'm thinking about applying for every sheep tag Nevada offers every year, including Ewe. Am I crazy to start building bonus points in 2022?
I agree with AZ hunter. Bivies make me claustrophobic. Roomy tent or nothing please
Experienced AZ hunters, what months of the year is a tent or cot necessary to keep the scorpions at bay?
I did a javelina/coues hunt in January. No concern about snakes or scorpions at night that time of year. Forecast was 0 chance of rain. So we opted to leave the tent behind. We had no problems.
However, bears are a real concern when sleeping in Arizona mountains. We saw plenty of bear sign...
I bought a brand-new military surplus tactical assault panel to use on backpack hunts. It is durable, of course, and it is hard to imagine anything more streamlined with equal capacity/versatility. It is low and out of the way of my backpack's straps and belt. There are mesh pockets on the...
I've got a brooks 7400. Only pack I'll ever need. I use it dayhunting to meathauling.
Pocket organization: I usually keep my stove and food for the day on one side. I keep water on the other (two litre apple juice bottle is my go-to). I hang a first aid kit from the tab at the top of the...
Okay, here's one I learned from turtle man himself:
Butcher the turtle but leave the meat on the bone. Put all the meat in a pot of water. Add a few tablespoons of cooking oil. Bring to a boil. The water will start to foam. Pour this off. Rinse the meat. Return to pot. Add vegetables...
Canada goose is way underrated. I went on my first goose hunt last winter and everyone said it would be "greasy." Yeah, well, bacon is greasy and no one complains about that!
What I learned:
1. Take the time to pluck the bird. This is way easier when they are still warm.
2. Slice the breast...
