I’m looking to scope a bolt action 223. Main use is coyote hunting and fun at the range. Throw some prairie dogs into the mix as well, occasionally.
I’d like to stay under $400, and I am seriously considering picking up an SWFA fixed power scope when I can find a decent deal.
What would you...
Curious why Savages don't come up more often when people are discussing hunting rifles. Certainly in terms of price their 10/110 models are not budget guns by any stretch of the imagination. They are famous for shooting well, although accuracy isn't hard to come by these days. From my limited...
Thanks everyone. I'm considering my first truly lightweight rifle, probably a Kimber Hunter. With such a lightweight rifle, recoil is a real concern for me.
Have any of you seen this recoil calculator? http://kwk.us/recoil.html
It's pretty interesting - the "Barsness' index" is especially...
In similar rifles, how would the recoil compare between a 6.5 creedmoor shooting bullets in the 140 grain range and a 308 win shooting bullets in the 150 grain range? I know there are a number of factors involved here, so I'm just looking for a general idea.
Saw a TC Venture II rifle at Cabela's. It seemed impressive. The action and bolt look an awful lot like the Sauer 100/ Mauser M18 design which I know is highly regarded by many. I'm not sure how the Venture II is different than the first Venture - I think the trigger is new and cerakote is now...
I think the Vanguard is every bit the equal to the Mark V from a function point of view. Howa makes a good, accurate rifle. If you find a Vanguard or Howa that has the stock, barrel, or other features that you like, you can hardly find a better rifle ... if you don't mind the weight. Disclaimer...
I remember a thread either here or on another hunting forum with some photo comparisons of the damage done by 6.5 143 eld-x bullets vs .30 178 eld-x bullets. I can’t find it now but I recall that there was often a significant difference. I may be misremembering.
Seems like the issue is not...
I've heard that some of the Leupold fixed power models have been excellent scopes, even for demanding users. But I know that not all fixed power scopes are created equal - does anyone here have any feedback on the Leupold FX-1 4x28 Rimfire scope? It is in the same price range as the big and...

Lots of good replies here. The more I think about it, the more I believe that used (but not too used) is the way to most to go for a down bag. Even used, Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends bags are never going to be budget options, but high end models from other reputable makers...
Of course it all depends on what your expectations are for a reasonable price. Sierra Designs down bags are relatively inexpensive, usually available for around $200 or a little more. They're made with 800 fill water resistant down.
A great option would be a lightly used 800-fill Marmot bag...
