Just listened to this podcast and WOW am I feeling a lot better about my shooting (and my backcountry hunting skills) and how I've been approaching shooting skills. This Chris Way guy is on my wavelength.

I took the advice of this forum. Here are the twins. Even managed to find 500 rounds of .223 to practice with this Spring. [edit to add: huh, didn't notice until I looked at this photo that the scopes are in totally different places. I wonder how I adjusted them with such different eye...
excellent!
Once I put a neoprene jacket on it, the weight savings won't be "huge" over my Jetboil MicroMo, less than 1/4lb.....but seeing how much I spend to shave that much weight off my rifle (or worse, my skis or bike!) this seems like a low hanging fruit improvement.
Thank you.
I've blown up several pieces of FirstLite clothing and been denied any kind of warranty/fix on all but one. I will not buy FirstLite again. I've replaced all my camo (except for a few outer layers for waterfowl hunting) with solids from Outdoor Research. OR stuff lasts me many years, and the...
This is awesome info, thank you!
I've done the same searching as you for a lightweight stove setup, but they all required me to carry more fuel due to inefficient heat transfer, completely negating any savings. I applaud your dedication and solution!
I, unlike you, boil a ton of water at a time...
This thread is mind boggling to me!
I've never hunted anywhere but Alaska. I didn't know many people regularly spent like you all do.
I spent $90 on draw tags last year (6 tries each at 3 different hunts). I got none of them, so I'm just going to hunt OTC for free. Several of my friends think...
Wow I'm jealous! I've been back in some of that area hiking and bird hunting and seen some sheep, dreamed of some day being able to hunt that high zone.
If I were to do this hunt, I would start scouting via California Creek and focus my efforts around Bird Peak (not to be confused with Bird...
I bought the SG swingout bags for my SG backpack. I don't love them. A lot of money for kind of dinky nylon pouch. Still using them, but probably wouldn't buy them again.
For pointy things, such as crampons or tent stakes, I often use USPS Priority Mail Tyvek bags. Tyvek is much lighter...
In general, they do fine, but they are definitely not built for it. A long haired dog would be better suited for most of bird season here, but that's not our only priority.
I try to not bring them out when it's below roughly 5F (-15C). If it's above about 15F (-9C) then they're totally fine...
Dumb newb question (this is specifically NOT about Southeast (aka coastal) black bears - I've searched the forums and web, but I'm still not sure. Much of the info seems to be about hunting from a boat, over bait, or targeting brown bears)
Question: What type of ground cover are black bears...
For hauling big loads, the difference in weight between all these backs is negligible, ignore it. The actual differences are slight in how the frame is set up (height, width, stiffness, contours, adjustability) and the little details on organization and access on the pack.
If you use one of...
You're in the zone of diminishing returns. Don't worry too much about it. I own one of the expensive packs, and I like it a lot. But, I was psyched to spend the money on it because.....well, because I was. If you're not really psyched to spend the cash on that, don't. The MR pack will work...
Yup, I have heel pieces on my hunting skis, but probably don't even need them. Full width & length mohair skins glide plenty for all I want to do, no need to rip them when hunting.
Just finished a week of driving around AK and hunting birds in a bunch of different spots. Mostly we were after willow ptarmigan, but also got some spruce grouse, failed to connect with any ruffed grouse, and put a few snowshoe hares in the freezer too.
The really fuzzy photo is of a wolf...
See you there....well, probably not actually, since it's a big area and few people, but my wife got this tag too, so we'll be out there. Good luck!
In the last decade it seems only about 1/2 the tags are even given out (limit of 50 I *think*), barely 1/3 of those 25 hunters show up, and only...
