.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Sounds like I ought to pick up a couple boxes of the BHA 77gr TMK's to have on hand then. Would be interesting to see how they group in my AR and nice to have on hand for when I pick up a bolt gun. (Note, "when", not "if"... I've seen enough in this thread now to be pretty damned convinced this...

Thought I had settled on a good "first rifle + glass" combo, less sure now

The planning stage. I've done enough dumb in the past to want to avoid doing more dumb if it can be avoided. I'm happy to learn what I don't know. Ref illumination, see below. Truthfully I don't know that it is regardless of what is being hunted. It's more hedging bets based on my experience...

    Outstanding, thank you gents.

USGI mags or Pmags? As I understand Pmags are a little tighter fitting.

Those thousand dollar scopes aren't quite in the budget right now. Sure would be nice though.

Those of y'all using the 77gr TMK bullets, in factory or hand loadings, what is the measured COAL? I'm trying to see if this might be usable in my ARs as well.

I mean I still might get one of these Burris scopes anyway (even knowing I may have to replace it, money be damned). It's such a nice comfy reticle and it's a shade over two bills from PSA. Only PIA will be getting a set of 1" rings since the only two sets of rings I have are 30mm and the only...

Thought I had settled on a good "first rifle + glass" combo, less sure now

Ah, the nice fella at Nightforce got back with me with the price list and... NF is still out of my price range for now. Looks like Trijicon Credo is still my best bet for a durable illuminated scope. I really wish I could find something good and reliable in the 1lb-ish range with a Burris...

Related to this point, for folks using the TMK and ELDM bullets in .223, how much has fragmentation and lead spoiling been a concern? It's hard to tell from just the pictures how much these bullets are retaining their mass. Some of it is clearly being lost but it looks like a fairly large amount...

Unfortunately I can't edit the original post to clarify, but I haven't purchased the rifle yet. I came here prior to doing that to make sure I was on the right track. As it stands now, I'm hunting rifle-less. Also, it turns out I was wrong about the discounts on ExpertVoice compared to the...

I do appreciate you gentlemen for gathering and sharing this knowledge. I spoke about this with my old man last night and he was as incredulous as I was. Same basic history though: our knowledge came purely from the conventional wisdom of his parents' age. I think this about settles my rifle...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Thank you for confirmation. I'm well into the thread and I'm honestly still coming to terms with how effective the .223 seems to be on large game. Part of me is still saying the 6.5 Grendel is a better choice so I never have to worry about state compliance laws but damned if the .223 isn't much...

What suppressors are you guys preferring on bolt guns? All of my (limited) knowledge on cans is centered around ARs and making them run reliably while suppressed, but that's clearly not an issue with a bolt gun. At that point I'd just want it to be light and handy.

Reading the thread in reverse to get some more recent pictures of current seasons, this was a 16" bbl .223 at 400 & 500y taking those cows? I read that right?

6.5 Grendel is twice the recoil impulse as .223? I thought it was like a 1.5lb more, sitting right between .223 and 7.62x39.

The deeper I get into this thread, the more impressed I am. I feel like I've been lied to my whole adult life. Thank you gentlemen very much for the shared wisdom!

Maybe a dumb question, but does Tikka have a stainless compact? If I find a compact stock on ebay or something, would it have any problems mating with a stainless lite barreled action assembly? Also thanks folks for the heads-up on other vendors. I'm unfamiliar with Euro Optics so I'll have to...

Thought I had settled on a good "first rifle + glass" combo, less sure now

Correct sir. I see a few brands that offer some pretty compelling discounts, but with Trijicon their MSRP is so much higher than street price at Optics Planet or similar that I kind of doubt the discount would amount to less than what other vendors sell their scopes at. Maybe I'm wrong? They use...

Damn. That's as firm an endorsement as it gets huh. Any particular barrel length? My head says 22"+ but my head also told me .223 wasn't enough for big game so...

Doesn't look like I can edit the original post to clarify, but by "landed on" I only mean decided, not purchased. Fortunately I had enough smarts to post the plan here for critique before sending money anywhere. Re: recoil & weight ResearchinStuff's mentioning of how .223 recoil is shaking his...
