My old neighbor told me when I moved here that in 1922, it never snowed until the end of Feb. Ten it snowed every day through June. I think this is a repeat. It has been 20 degrees nearly every morning since Dec except when it was substantially colder.
Yesterday was forecast to be clear. It...
Just a side note:
Whatever you chose - buy two. That way if you yo-yo you can travel as far as you can, then rest up on the way back to pick up the next load. With two you don't have to repack each time. I have moved a lot of elk and deer this way even though I prefer ponies.
I have never had a vacation. As the kids were growing up, the wife would take them on trips but I would have to remain home to take care of the animals, put up hay or get my winter wood in.
My job put me in a tent and a remote camp during the week someplace in the west. I guess that could be...
Now I usually have a ham and cheese sandwich and a pocket full of trail mix. I take a quart of gatorade (lightly mixed).
When I was younger my wife would make up a bunch of pasties that I could graze on as I wandered through the jungles.
I remember sitting on a log in a creek bottom...
Joe Back also authored or co- authored a couple other books that talks about packing and hunting experiences that are informative and entertaining. Over the years I have learned a lot from other peoples adventures and mis- adventures.
When I was young, I found a site in the puckerbrush and packed in a couple bags of mineral salt in late spring.
When I returned in the fall I found heavily developed trails to get to the site, an area 100x150 ft that had been excavated by the elk and deer down 18 inches and heavy grazing...
Three ways to lose weight and two of them suck. Chemo, type 2 diabetes with ozempic (1.0), and 6 weeks of hunting. I work at gaining weight so I don't blow away.
My father gave me his remington model 12 take down model. He bought it in the 1920s for I think $20. It has killed hundreds of grouse and gophers.
If I can help it, it will be in the family forever.
The cats will fill their habitat and then the young and the old will move into towns with the deer. Eventually they will feed on the stray cats and dogs on the way to eating little kids on tricycles. Then the population will start to have a better understanding.
In the 70s and 80s I had lot of elk hides tanned as it was affordable and handy. From them I made chaps, coats, mittens, shirts and varius items I still use.
I don't know about moose but elkhide is warm and lasts forever. You used to be able to get them tanned to chap weight to match the use...
Sounds a little like- rode hard and put away wet. It's important to listen to what your body is telling you. Some things are survivable.
My goal is to keep on driving past the nursing home. I do understand why so many of the old guys I worked with were pickled by 10 am.
The tendonitis is a distraction as well as the sharp pain as tendons slide over the bone spurs.
Today I was pulling shoes on horses. I noted that a hesitance has developed as I dive into things that I had never anticipated. I guess it is not having faith I can withstand a wreck of some kind. I...
I only worked there in 81 for 4 months. I would strongly suggest take less money and go someplace else. I was told by a student from Wenatchee that it has turned to crap from migrants from Seattle. The choices are thin and not worth your life.
I think it is the need to live for something. For many of us it is another hunting season.
The sad part is when kids finally decide, it appears difficult to change the direction. I had a co-worker whose kid attempted it many times before he got the job done.
I think we have done this before but---. I'm kinda retired - off and on. I was a fisheries biologist, geologist, mining engineer, mine manager, professor and rancher. Now I assist people in finding placer gold, government permits, put up hay, and train horses.
Retirement means I work under my...
