In open country let your eyes do the walking instead of your legs! The trick with elk is to cover lots of country but don’t blow them out of your area! Also remember it will likely take 3 or 4 trips to pack a bull out plus another trip for your camp! If you shoot a bull even 2 miles from the...
Do yourself a favor and sell your current binos and put that plus rangefinder $ towards a bino/rangefinder combo. It's a pain in the rear carrying both......and going back and forth between binos and rangefinder. Having just one may also be the difference in time between getting a monster...
Looks like a great large volume, light weight pack. Like the load lifters are pretty high on the bag. I actually prefer large volume packs that can be cinched down tight so there is room to pack bulky loads the first trip out. I sometime have large or bulky life-sized capes so it's nice to...
Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, this websites classified and camofire are your best friends. I bought 2 kifaru packs and frames nearly new for 1/2 price. Before I bought kifaru I used and abused arcteryx bora 90 packs. They were by far the cheapest quality pack I’ve used. Capable of 80+ lb...
The only guided hunt I've done was fishing the great lakes. I learned a bunch and would have been spinning my wheels without the expertise and advice for gear, tackle, and fishing hotspots learned from a local. There is something to be said for having local knowledge of access, hunting...
Obviously some public enjoy seeing antlers on hunters trucks, etc in transit and driving down the road and others don't. Here in Colo where I live the majority of people aren't hunters and some think it's rude for hunters to strap antlers to the top of their trucks. I understand both sides. I...
I always find that it's possible to shed layers to stay cooler but is a bummer if you are cold at night. It's nice to have the option of unzipping or sleeping on top of your bag if it's too warm. Sleep is that important! Layering in bed is your best buddy if you want to travel light...
I have used and abused my nallo for years in Alaska, Colorado, Wyo, and Utah. There hasn’t been a time I haven’t been able to stake it down. The Anjan mentioned above is similar but a little thinner material. The anjan would likely be more breathable since the fly doesn’t reach all the way to...
Draw odds tend to be all over the place from one unit to the next. Sometimes it’s a matter of tossing dice. If special prices increase it may change things somewhat. In units where there are only a few nonres tags it doesn’t take many applicants to dramatically change things.
I prefer stocking feet. There are a lot more boot options that are much more comfortable. Also check regs for boot bottoms in Alaska. I’m pretty sure felt bottoms are illegal in some drainages in Alaska.
It’s not getting any easier for western state’s both res and nonres to draw tags. The sad news about Wyo and Colo is that both state’s residents are complaining it’s getting tougher and tougher to draw high demand tags.
Colo has been known to be the West’s most nonres friendly state handing...
You are on your way after your Wyo trip and success. The more time you spend in the summer scouting and figuring out your gear and equipment the more prepared you will be.
Pre-hunt scouting. Being able to kick back with no pressure of harvesting a critter and enjoying the scenery and wildlife up close and personal before it’s spooked.
2nd would be the ultimate excitement of walking up to a harvested critter knowing all the boot leather, glassing, and hard...
I work outside for my job and am super tough on regular Levi’s. I mostly wear carharts now. Carharts are available in breathable summer to winter insulated models. They wear really well and take a lot of abuse.
I'd likely take a look at 180 grain nosler partitions. I've had great luck with 150 grain noslers but may need a chunk more lead for grizz and moose if you keep the distance shorter.
