You should definitely check out Modern Huntsman. It’s not so much a magazine as it is a coffee table book/periodical published twice per year. Top notch writing, photography, and printing. It has a lot of international content and perspectives. It is pricey compared to your typical 6 or 12 issue...
I got the 13’ Avalon recently and took it out for 3 nights this past Christmas. Camped in central CO at 9k ft and had some stiff winds (40ish mph). I was very happy with it in general and how it stood up to wind. Haven’t gotten to take it out again yet, unfortunately. Disclaimer that this is my...

Am I reading your responses right that you have both a double stack handgun and binos in your HPG chest rig? If so which model/size do you have?
I’m interested in getting a HPG chest pack to hold both a double stack (G19) and compact binos (8x30 Maven B3) but wasn’t sure...
Do any of you have experience using a combination of compact (8x30ish) and extra large (15/18x56ish) binoculars for your average western (I'm in CO) hunting? What did/do you think of that type of combo? How does a compact bino of a similar quality compare to a more "standard" (10x42ish) as your...
I ordered mine on Wed afternoon. It still shows as processing on CampSaver’s site. But through my Fedex account, I got notification of a package that could only be this tent from CampSaver. It is currently in transit and arriving on Monday according to Fedex.
I was getting tired of instant coffee too, but then I just started adding hot cocoa mix. I’ve dubbed it my Mountain Mocha (TM). It scratches the coffee/caffeine itch, covers the bad coffee flavor, gives you some extra sugar to work with, and requires no extra equipment or soggy trash.
I can't really speak on what it takes to develop a great bird dog as my own dog-training and upland hunting experience is quite limited. But I did get a 7-ish year old (now 8) GSP from a shelter a little over a year ago. Similar to your situation, my dog did not listen too well and was not food...

doh, sorry I missed your question a while ago, @SBR Sarge
I could totally be wrong here, but from what I understand, a textured steel will sharpen (ie take some metal off your blade). I'm sure there are varying degrees depending on the aggressiveness and composition of the steel's texture...
ok, steel geeks, does anyone have strong opinions about particular whetstone brands/products?
I have some random 400/1000 grit whetstone from Amazon that has served me well so far, but I am looking to buy a high-grit whetstone (somewhere between 3000-8000) for the finer work/touchups. I could...
+100 on a honing (not sharpening) steel rod. Start with a good edge on your knives, touch up on the steel every 15 min or so, and you won’t have to resharpen for a long time. I keep a beater knife close by for anything where I’m really digging around joints/bone.
Active Junky (an online shopping cashback platform) will get you way more cash back than a particular credit card. You can get anywhere from 2-10% (sometimes more) cashback by shopping online with Cabela's, Bass Pro, Sierra, Moosejaw, Steep & Cheap, Sportman's Warehouse, Kuiu, Brownell's.
If I...
+1 for a texture-less honing (not sharpening) steel for touch ups. This is assuming you are starting out with a great edge. I have a Victorinox steel that I hit several times/hour and makes a noticeable difference. No need to sharpen a blade for a looong time if you are touching it up frequently...
Thanks for the feedback so far, everyone. Man, you guys have me looking at wall tent rentals now.
I know a hot tent is definitely superior for comfort and convenience which can be hard to come by in the mountains that time of year. It will work its way into my inventory, just not this year...
