    Do I need more grains?

In my opinion they don't. Their "minimum expansion velocity" is not FULL expansion. It would be very helpful if they stated what velocity was required for to expand all the way to the bottom of the hollow point (a bullet can get wider from there but that is a good peel back) and provided photos...

    Son's first rifle

Hands down I've had the kids shoot the 243win over the 7-08. I actually pulled the barrel off the 7-08 for now and put a shorter 284win on there for myself to use suppressed. My older son just shot a deer with the 284win because I also had an elk tag so that was the gun I wanted to carry. But...

    PVA Cayuga Terminal Performance

I've only seen limited reports, one batch with glowing reports and then some others trickling in saying mixed performance. I had a batch of hammer bullets that were too hard and caused some rodeos, I have a hard time seeing how the small hollow point on the PVA bullets is going to reliably...

    Son's first rifle

Or let him shoot out the 243win over the years and toss another barrel of your desired cartridge on there. :)

    Rokstok review thread

I don't carry a dedicated shooting bag, but my possibles pouch / kill kit (aside from the bags) has been used ALOT as a shooting bag over the years. ;)

    Son's first rifle

I think OR requires .243 caliber for elk.

    Tikka T3 build

This unless you really want an aftermarket barrel. There are black friday sales on tikkas happening / going to happen and there is still a $75 rebate too. Easy button.

Is the lug on that bipod too narrow for the pic rail without the center?

    Son's first rifle

IMHO just get a tikka 243, bonus is that the new ones have a good twist rate but the older 10 twist kill well too. I'd not worry about the compact stock, your son is likely growing quickly and my boys didn't have much issue with a normal tikka stock originally when they were <5'. They've...

    Bullet tumbling

Talking paper or in an animal? The paper part was covered above. In an animal lower impact velocity may not consistently upset the bullet and instead it might tumble.

    Do I need more grains?

I can't say I've experienced the same with a TTSX / LRX with 2200fps+ impacts. The permanent wound in meat isn't frangible bullet sized but its multiples larger than caliber, IE I think its a minimization to call a 1.5" hole (for example) barely larger than a ~.3" bullet. I am a broken record...

.338 Lapua...worth the effort and cost?

Certainly, but at that point I'd have just discussed the pet project and not bothered mentioning elk <500yd to muddy the waters. :) Have fun tinkering!

    Do I need more grains?

I prefer 2200+ esp on the TTSX, maybe I'd go down to 2100fps on the LRX for solid expansion. This is 400-500fps over the velocity that barnes says initiates expansion but is FAR from full.

New Rifle Build- Bullet and Caliber- Mono metal- Thoughts?

The ADI 55gr blitzkings are affordable and have shot well in my tikka 223 and others also. The 69gr matchking version has mixed reviews lot by lot but I haven't seen anyone complain about the 55gr yet. Brass looks of decent quality to reload afterwards and no crimp to deal with.

.338 Lapua...worth the effort and cost?

Why are we even discussing the NEED for a larger gun then, you're already well covered with the 300wsm for the situation you described. Now if you have a want then carry on with whatever pet project caliber/components suit your fancy. But <500yd for elk has zero need for a new gun or larger...

Feedback on Preferred Barrel Hybrid Lite for Tikka T3x Lite

It needs some sanding for clearance and a bit more sanding for clearance when flexed hard. Overall its nothing major though.

Any barrel companies have Black Friday sales?

Do you have to call in for that or were they planning to update the options?

Any barrel companies have Black Friday sales?

I can certainly see that (and feel it'll be stiffer), it just costs an extra $150 vs the smaller diameter barrel.

Any barrel companies have Black Friday sales?

looks like ~3.5-5oz saved depending on 16-20" length if I estimated right? I was gonna go .75" with 5/8-24 threads but now I'm pondering the .68 with 1/2-28 and use an adapter when needed for 5/8-24...
