if, during the night you find yourself tossing and turning constantly to warm up or you dont know why you are cold, your pad should be the first thing to upgrade.
there is more to consider than just cooling off the rifle. while you waited on the barrel to cool did the clouds dissipate and the sun come out? did the temperature rise during the day? temperature rises and humidity falls and sometimes bullets speed up.
not knocking the likely possibility...

a good cleaning turned them into great guns. one did require taking the trigger apart and soaking the pieces in solvent for a few days.
step son had problems with a custom barrel and took it to his smith. the smith took a look and put some scotch Brite on a short cleaning rod and chucked it in a drill. he almost panicked when the drill was inserted in the chamber but in a few seconds the ring was gone.
