Thanks Marble. I’m confident in most cases out to 400-500. But like you would prefer to have more energy just in case of less than ideal conditions. good to know the ranges could vary wildly.
DIY in Colorado 2nd rifle. Likely some backpacking, but not too deep. First time so not sure range but want to be covered in case of a longer opportunity.
I’m currently in same boat. Shooting 6.5 300 and 7-mm08 for whitetail and hogs... considering adding a 300 for Elk/western. This thread has been incredibly helpful!
So planning first bull elk trip out west in October.
I have a hells canyon speed in 7mm-08 shooting 140AB and a weatherby 6.5-300 w/127LRX. Both sub MOA. I know both are considered ‘OK’ for elk but I am honestly considering stepping up to a big 30 in a mountain type rifle and have all bases...
Hey bud, sry for the 2.5 year late reply! Any luck on your hunts? Struck out on first western cow elk in 19, planning to back in September. Killed a couple whitetails in St Augustine. No gobblers. Happy to bounce ideas!
FNG from NE FL. Chasing whitetail, hogs and turkey in the pines and cypress swamps. Bow is my preference, but also shoot rifle.
Still learning, as the affliction hit me later in life. Learning a lot from this forum and hope to get out West next year for first Elk hunt.
