I'm curious what others thoughts are on these as well. I'm considering using the 175gr or 185gr VLD for my 300 winmag. I've heard they're only super effective at ranges of 300 yards or more. Anything under that and the J4 jacket doesn't expand like it's intended.
I did look these numbers up and I ended up going with the 243 cause the 7-08 wasn't much less recoil than the 270. And I still have the 30-06 for big stuff.
Yup it's weird, I know. My 30-06 is heavier and it has a good recoil pad so it's not as bad. But like I said, the .270 is just a sharper recoil than what I'd like.
I have an almost new Savage Axis .270 with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12 x 40. The recoil is a bit too sharp for me so I am looking to trade it for something with less recoil for my sissy shoulder. I just want a lightweight deer rifle. I have two offers so far. A straight gun trade, no scopes, for a...
Ok so I’m getting into hunting birds and want a good hunting dog. And I’m in Southern Alberta Canada so winters are cold and summers are hot. This isn’t a spontaneous decision as I’ve been thinking about getting a dog for a couple of years now. Hunting dogs weren’t on my list at first but...
I wish I was able to take the second option but I’m in Canada. I can’t even build a nice .308 off a non restricted AR platform now that our prime minister banned everything. A lot of frustrated Canadians right now.
I was thinking about that exact set up, but I got such a good deal on this package that I couldn’t pass it up. Now I’m thinking about a Tikka .243 for everything else. I’m probably gonna put a Leopold VX5 on top of this one.
I had to look that phrase up. Not too much cotton up here in Canada haha.
Is the forward base on backwards?
I like the wood look so I’ll probably keep it as is. The whole set up is a little heavier than I thought it would be though. It comes in at 9.4 pounds as is. I thought that was a little...
just an update on what I’ve purchased so far. Being an over thinker it’s taking me some time to figure out what I want, but then I came across this guy on Gunpost and couldn’t pass it up. It’s a Tikka T3 Lite Hunter in 30-06. It came with a bipod, ammo holder, limb saver, a cheaper Burris scope...
Would these type of apps be more useful in competition settings rather than for on the go hunting? I can’t seem to find much information on these type of apps for hunting scenarios.
I think for the average hunter/shooter there’s enough of a range of bullets out there to get the results you’re hoping for. I think a lot of guys reload to either save money or because it’s turned into a hobby for them or they’re prepping for the inevitable Z apocalypse. But what do I know, I’m...
Glad I came across this thread because I was thinking about buying one of the mid range vortex scopes, but I think I’m more leaning towards a Leopold or saving up for a bit longer and going with the Zeiss v4. I want something that’s good for low light.
I thought about the 300wsm for a while. I think I'm going with the 30-06 because of the spectrum of bullets available. I also think I might move away from the 6.5 and go down to a .243.
Have you used a brake on a hunting rifle before? I heard it can affect accuracy.
Thanks for all the replies and advice, even though my head is spinning more now than it was before. Too many guns, calibres, cartridges and loads to choose from. I’ve read every single post and what I’ve got from it is that I might be better off to stick with one all around rifle and spend a bit...
Hey new to the forum here and relatively new to hunting. I currently just hunt deer with my Marlin 30-30 but I’m looking to broaden my big game options with a couple new lighter rifles. Something for bear and Moose, and then something for everything smaller than that. What I was thinking about...
