I've done a few euro mounts of pronghorn already. The trick is once you get the horn sheaths off you need to pack the sheaths with borax or salt to get them dried out, remove the fleshy bits from the horn bones and then use epoxy or something to seal up the inside of the sheaths. I packed them...
Thanks! I brought my Fuji x100v on this trip to keep bulk and weight down due to flying. It's a great camera for keeping on you to document whatever is going on.
Your host, Bert, just left Kurt a review
"The cleaning staff was very pleased with Kurt’s stay at the cabin. The rules were followed, the cabin was left neat and clean. Recommend for other hosts."
We kept the exhaust fan running and nearby door open to ventilate, plus unloaded half a can of air...
I just got back from a WY pronghorn and despite a very strong desire to drag along my new R7 and assortment of big lenses I decided to continue to practice what I preached in this thread and only took my X100V.
Full recap here...
We headed back out to a spot where we saw one of the biggest bucks in the unit two days prior. Hopeful that he was still hanging around we started a slow and methodical hike around a couple of hillsides to try and glass likely areas they might be grazing or bedded down. I stowed the camera in...
This buck, young and curious, presented a perfect shot opportunity at less than 100 yards and with one shot he dropped instantly.
Too fast to have been captured on camera I spotted another buck, much larger than the first. Kurt and I both moved into position to try and make a shot. I tried...
We started seeing pronghorn pretty quickly and marked dozens of waypoints on OnX. The unit had been hit hard by winter kills a few years ago and numbers were down from what we expected, but there were bucks to be found. Many were small to average size and only a handful approaching 'big' in...
11 years ago I met a stranger from the internet at the end of a dirt road outside Kankakee, Illinois to try hunting for the first real time - enter Kurt. We both had shotguns, it was 4AM in the relative middle of nowhere, what could go wrong? I had wandered around in the woods with a .22 looking...
Your D7500 does up to 4k video so you might want to give that a go before diving into a new camera system. The thing that is going to give you a cinematic look has more to do with the lenses and video settings than the camera itself. The recommendation to use filters to protect the lens is not...
Are you shooting in RAW? If not, the power of Lightroom, Capture One, etc. will be largely wasted on JPGs. Shooting on Auto on the camera doesn't really negate post processing of RAW files or not, though if you are happy with the colors and exposure of the JPGs straight out of camera then I'd...
I have a ThinkTank/MindShift Backlight 26L I use for purely photo gear that works pretty well. https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/backlight-series/products/backlight-26l
I can fit my 80D, 18-35, 150-600, 70-200, spare batteries, filters, tripod and other assorted odds and ends in it...
RE: FOID issue, I'm an IL resident and have flown in and out of MDW and ORD with firearms multiple times and not once has anyone asked to see a FOID. As stated earlier, non-residents do not need to have a FOID, particularly unloaded and locked in a case as you would need them to be to check them...
Gunfighters Inc. Kenai is the best option for chest mounted guns I have found besides the HPG kit bags. Have you tried the suspension bungee with the kit bag? Are you married to a big steel gun? Something a little lighter would be a lot easier to keep from bouncing around.
