Preference points are worthless if you don't use them - WY Trip Recap

Real happy we burned points when we did given this season's cuts. Thread title proves accurate still :D

    Outdoorsman pricing

Echoing the customer service and build quality. I've stopped into the store a couple times after hunting trips in AZ and they were happy to answer dozens of questions, pull out all sorts of optics to demo and play with, explain how all their gear is made and intended to be used, etc. I have a...

Want to go caribou hunting someday before I die!

If you have a little bit of time before you want to go, set up an Ally or other HYSA account (currently getting 3.75% in interest) and auto-deposit to it every paycheck. I have $150 going into a "caribou" bucket in my account that happens without me thinking about it with the intent of going on...

Pics of animals you weren't hunting

I suppose this is me. I've done a little paid work doing food photography but photography is definitely not my day job and I haven't done a paid gig in probably over a decade at this point. It'd be nice if I could find a way to make a bit of money to put towards new glass or a second body, though.

Pics of animals you weren't hunting

Thanks, the body is a Canon EOS R7 and I think the lens for all of those was the Tamron G2 150-600mm but if not then the Tamron G2 70-200 f2.8

Pics of animals you weren't hunting

Just got back from fishing in FL, spent a couple days around the Everglades too. It's basically Jurassic Park.

    Lens recommendations

What's your budget for new glass? The Sigma Art 18-35/1.8 is one of the best APS-C sensor lenses out there. It's extremely clear, sharp and is great for low light landscape shots. Something like a 70-200/2.8 would be good for shooting sports. Those are definitely not budget or entry level...

Anyone appendix carry with an RMR/MRD?

I carry a Glock 48MOS with a TLR-7sub and Holosun 407K in a LAS Concealment Saya 2.0 on a Phlster Enigma LC appendix rig. Biggest issue I have with it is dust/lint on the glass but it's not enough to restrict seeing the dot and after the first round fired it'd probably be cleared off.

Let's See Your Semi-Custom Tikka Builds

It's a .22, but still a Tikka. T1x in a KRG Bravo chassis, Vortex Viper HSLR 4-16x44, Area 419 barricade stop, ARCA rail, knockoff Atlas bipod, custom designed 3D printed biathlon style mag caddy.

    Favorite Non-native Lenses

The issues come mostly with my 150-600 G2 and R7 in animal/bird eye AF tracking. It'll grab focus very quickly but after it holds for an indeterminate amount of time it'll start hunting back and forth. It's pretty well documented online. Some specific lenses exhibit more issues than others...

    Favorite Non-native Lenses

The only disadvantage to Sigma or Tamron in the Canon environment is if you upgrade to a mirrorless body the new AF subject detection is not as reliable as first party lenses. There are also no RF mount Sigma or Tamron lenses currently and maybe ever as there’s some drama going on around that...

Prime vs telephoto and wildlife photography

No problem! I'd suggest to keep shooting with what you have and if you reach a point where you can articulate how and why an upgrade in either lens or body is necessary then maybe it's time to consider that 600/f4 :D

Prime vs telephoto and wildlife photography

The biggest advantage to a prime lens is that it's (usually) going to be faster than a superzoom telephoto like the Tamron and Sigma 150-600s. I use the Tamron G2 150-600 with my Canon 80D and R7, both of which are crop sensors, and get great results. On a full frame like the Z6 the lens and...

    Glove recommendations

Gloves are maybe my least favorite piece of gear but for a pair that you can wear while active (vs mitts when glassing or stationary) but still keeping warm and retaining good dexterity these are some of the best I've tried. https://skdtac.com/pig-fdt-cold-weather-glove/

Preference points are worthless if you don't use them - WY Trip Recap

Thanks, I don't know much about print media but I certainly wouldn't turn down the conversation if it somehow presented itself. Re: the dude on the flight, I work loosely in the same field and if he/his work was so sensitive that someone taking a photo of the back of his head in a public place...

    WIFI freezer monitor

I bought a Govee wifi temp/humidity sensor and despite it not being rated for extreme low temps its been working just fine. I have it set to alert me if it gets above 15F which would indicate that I've lost power or the freezer has failed for quite some time as it normally sits below -1 to - 10F.

Which lens to take on upcoming hunt?

Thanks! Yeah that does look awful similar, Fuji definitely takes a retro design approach and is kind of the 'budget Leica' option. That said, a Leica Q2 Reporter is something I lust after but likely could never justify the cost of.

Thanks, I wish I had a bit tighter shot on that but I was really happy it turned out as well as it did.
