130's have worked well for me, I have best luck with about .100" jump. Get a box and try shooting them with a powder you like doing a seating depth test, if the gun likes them you'll probably shoot at least one good group by the time you burn up a box of 50, if not, go back to what works.
I suppose I have 6" of barrel to work with, I can take an inch off and see how it works and if I screw it up I can always find a smith to take some more
Has anyone tried the at home barrel crowning tools from Midway or Brownells? My wife finally decided to come to the range with me and it turns out she actually liked shooting. I had her shooting my .223 and 6.5 Creedmoor, but both are full length stocks and 24" barrels so they didn't fit her...
Light bullets will probably just have a lot of jump to the lands, but depending on what you're trying to do that's not necessarily a bad thing. My first round of load development is a seating depth test from .050"-.150" off the lands, but sometimes I even go further and get good results. If you...
If you want to do an extreme spread test with low density loads like 4451 you can try tipping the rifle straight up, then slowly lower into a level position to shoot through the chrono then tip it straight down with the next round and slowly bring it back to level to shoot through the chrono...
If you want to build one in 2021 I'd place backorders on brass for both and once something ships cancel the others, seems like a good way to make the decision. I built a 7RM last year on a Tikka and if I do it again I'd run 7SAUM, in a Tikka I'm limited to 3.34" and luckily I found a load with...
Anytime I've bag flopped one on a property line there was still a lot of blood that would drain out when gutting so I wouldn't worry. I actually have my best luck if I leave ground burger in a strainer in a bowl overnight before cooking, you'll drain an ounce or two of blood out of a pound of...
I run a 150 Barnes TTSX in a 30-06 for whitetails so that I can shoot from any direction and know I'll make it to the vitals, but I prefer to go for center of vitals instead of the high shoulder. Unless I put it in the liver or guts I've never seen a deer make it more than 100 yards with this...
I've been wanting to make an 18" or 20" barrel whitetail rifle for a while now and thought about doing a normal .270 Win, but heard the muzzle blast would be a lot in that short of barrel. I'd be curious to see if anyone puts this in a short barrel, in theory it might work well in shorter...
If my calculator is right I get 7mm/25.4=.276 inches, based on this I think they should have called it the 7mm Western, that would really get people questioning their long held beliefs.
What I really want is for Hornady to come out with a 284 PRC, it should be half way between the 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC in case capacity, max length of 3.340" and throated for 162-180 ELD's. It could push the 175 ELD-X at about the same velocity as a 7 Rem Mag with lighter ELD-X bullets and should...
I meant I want something I can have a few more options to try, it seems like Nosler and Berger are the only 2 moving in the heavy .277 direction. On paper the cartridge looks good, but until you can get published load data it's hard to say if there's much difference from a 7 SAUM. Either one...
I almost went 270WSM when I rebuilt my Tikka this year, but ended up staying with 7mm Rem Mag because there's more options to play with in load development. I would have considered the 6.8 Western because it seems like a good match for Tikka's 3.34" mag limitation in a deer/antelope rifle, but...
I never could get E-Tips to shoot well enough to take them hunting, the only animals I've harvested with solid coppers have been Barnes TTSX-BT. So far in 5 different rifles my combo has been mid-weight for caliber slugs, faster burning powders and seat deep to the last ring (usually jumping...
As long as you get the tipped Barnes you won't have to worry about expanding out to a couple hundred yards on a whitetail. Even when I hit between the ribs I've still had full expansion in my 30-06's and if any kind of bone is hit you won't have a problem. Expansion issues are usually from the...
MT050 has worked well for me, I went up one size on the bibs to fit extra insulation under them and got my normal size in the coat so I could still shoot my bow. If I have the right layers underneath including a puffy, a set of boot blankets and a neck gaiter I'm good for all day sits in the...
I put together my first semi-custom this year using a Tikka action and a Lilja barrel chambered in 7mm rem mag. If you're doing a first time build I would probably save the money and go with a steel non-fluted barrel from any one of the reputable barrel makers. My plan was to learn about the...
It does work to sling it against the tree, it's just hard to grab it without making a lot of noise and movement when I'm all bundled up. I do like the idea of having something like a bog pod attached to the rifle, I'll have to play around with that and see what I can make work.
The Cabela's MT050 works for me in cold temps, if you layer in a puffy underneath you should be good down to Teens. My go to in the late season is actually a cheap Cabela's one piece suit that I got on sale for $100 one year after Christmas. It's not waterproof, but when it's really cold I don't...
