Montana Draw Results - Aug 5

I ended up with the region 7 tag as a nonresident, but I did have 4 points. I can't go until after the 2nd weekend of the season so I feel like it's time to start lowering my standards.

    308 130gr TTSX Loads?

I shoot the 130's and my normal process with Barnes is to load them 0.100" off the lands and do 3 shot groups working up the charge weight in 1/2 gr increments to check for pressure. Then I back down 1 grain from where I find pressure or the book max and do a seating depth test at .050", .075"...

    Weight sorting brass

That seems a little worse than I've seen, but Hornady is known to have a big spread in this department. I like to use this process to cull out the outliers on either end, then use those for pressure testing or blasting. My thought process has been that if I'm at safe pressure levels with a heavy...

    Worth it to cut?

I cut mine down to 20" and it lost less than 100 fps, I'm working on a 120gr Barnes load to use on short range whitetails so the loss in velocity didn't really matter for what I'm doing.

    H4831sc

Anyone know how long these direct orders are actually taking to ship? I finally got an 8# of H4831SC ordered last night but won't actually believe it until I have it in hand.... They had H4350 in stock too that I almost added, but I have enough to get through this year so I left it hoping it...

    Truck Camping Pad

My dad and I got 30" wide and 3" thick self inflating mats, he got Cabelas I got Thermarest. Then we got a queen size memory foam topper which was 60" wide and cut it in half. I took an old bed sheet folded in half and sewn to make a bag that holds the foam and thermarest together. This was I...

    7mm mag - what's going on?

60 grains tends to be the point you move into magnum primers, if you're in MN and were shooting in cold weather that probably doesn't help the ignition either. Weird things can happen if you're on the low end of ignition, I don't know the technical reasons behind this, but if you can't find any...

    Aftermarket Tikka stock.. lighter?

If you go with the open style butt stock it comes raw at 17-18oz, but you can drop an ounce trimming the LOP down to fit most people, then add back an ounce for bedding, paint and finish. From there pick your pad option than can range from 1-8oz. The one I have on my 7mm weighs 29 oz finished...

    Aftermarket Tikka stock.. lighter?

I had really good luck with the Wildcat, but I didn't really save weight over factory. I went with the option that has an I-beam through the grip and all the way to the butt, it adds 6 oz, but I liked the balance better to offset a longer barrel. A big part of the weight variation is actually in...

mountain rifle under 6 lbs (w/o scope)

$2-4k is a pretty wide range, if you want to keep it at $2k it's hard to beat a Tikka donor then have a good barrel on it. If you shoot a caliber that runs well in 18-20" barrels you should be under 6# if the barrel runs the factory Tikka contour. A wildcat stock once you can get them imported...

Help me decide. Caliber change on Model 7.

A 7-08 will push a 140 about the same as a 150 in a .308, anytime I try running the comparison charts they seem to fall within a round error of each other. There's a lot of .308's in the world so I'd go with the 7 to be interesting, either one has good options for brass or factory ammo so that's...

Twist rates & bullet weights 7mm rem mag

You can go light without problems, my factory barrel likes 120's better than anything and my 1:9" Lilja barrel preferred 150's over 162's. If you can get under 2" with cheap practice loads that's doing good, sometime you luck out and find bottom shelf stuff that a specific rifle likes, but don't...

Faster powder for a short barrel?

Varget or 4064 would both be good options in that combo, I used to spend more time playing with powders to optimize my loads, but now I tend to focus on playing with the projectile and seating depth using 1 or 2 powders that should work and have better luck. I used to like burning out half my...

    Lilja Barrels

I've had good luck, I went with their 3 groves, but I'm not convinced one way or the other on that. If I did it again I'd probably stick to 4 grove or 5R on my 7mm's.

Faster powder for a short barrel?

I cut mine from 24 to 20 and was planning to start with my same powders, unless you're going real short I wouldn't worry about hotter powders.

    7mm Rem Mag load info

I pressure out lower than that, but Hornady brass was all I could get so I have trouble hitting max loads

    Tikka 7mm build?

I stuck with standard 7mm RM when I rebarreled mine with a 1:9" twist in 26", but it only likes lighter bullets so I run 150 ELD-X, I load to 3.34" and end up jumping 0.100". Mine shoots well with a lot of jump so I just go with it, if you get a short 7mm you'll need new magazines as well. The...

    H4831sc 7mm Rem Mag

H4831SC is my go to in the 7mm Rem Mag, but I'm saving the little I have left for fall 2021. I'd start low and work your way up, depending on what load data you look at for this combo the min/max loads are all over the board. I started getting pressure signs at 65.0 gr with 150 ELD-X so I backed...

Let's See Your Semi-Custom Tikka Builds

I think I'm going to drop off my 6.5CM with my smith today and see what he can do, I've never played around with short barrels before so it should be interesting to work on some load development.

Let's See Your Semi-Custom Tikka Builds

Crack a beer to take off the edge and just spray it, if you don't like it just spray over until you get it right. Were you able to get the factory barrel unscrewed to thread it, I want to cut down and thread 2 of my Tikkas, but the last one I rebarreled took a relief cut in front of the action...
