    Gas stove vs wood stove

I've used the seek outside titanium box stove and a kettle. Works great. I hunt alone and it is nice to have something to do before falling asleep. I'm also a cold sleeper, so it is helpful to get warmed up before falling asleep. That said, I took a three season tent and a jetboil on both of...

How high are mule deer in the Park Range?

I have an early rifle tag for the E. Side of Colorado's Park Range that opens Monday (9/28). I have never been to that part of the state before. I am inclined to hunt at timberline, but the reason they have this season is because the deer in North Park tend to migrate early. Does anyone have...

who is ramping up the training using a stairmaster

The only thing better indoors is real stairs because you can go down too (helps season knees and ankles a bit) and you don't have to leave the office to do it. I get in a lot of vert and avoid a lot of work at the same time.

    New guy hunting elk

Welcome, JPC. I too am 41 and hunt the Colorado backcountry alone. I just started hunting a couple years ago at 39. This site has been very valuable for me. I've got mule deer and packed them out by myself the last couple of years, but have yet to get an elk down. Maybe this will be the...

    lightning safety

I wouldn't worry about the forecast. You'll have every kind of weather there is in a single day anyway. Making camp in dark timber is about as safe a place as you'll find from lightning. I would be aware of the weather if you are above timberline, but the weather changes so fast you almost...

    Bearproof Food Container

I'll be hunting there too. Or I might try the other wilderness area at the south end of the unit. I hate lugging my bear canister.

    What Binos..

I have the same pair. If I remember right they are just under 1 lb. Wide field of view. Sharp and bright. Easy to carry and easy to hold steady.

    Solo elk hunt this year!!!

Good luck on your hunt, Mike. One thing that might give you some confidence is having an outfitter on call if you need them for the pack out. You can find a list of the licensed outfitters for your area here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/whiteriver/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5281134 Scroll...
