When were "the good old days"?

2005 (+/-) was the end of the good old days based on several factors. Had more elk, less hunters, less predators, less internet, no iPhone.

.300wm bolt stuck after firing Barnes VOR-TX 180 TTSX BT

Call Barnes. They may want you to send the box of ammo back to Barnes so they can analyze it. I’m sure they will compensate you. Assuming no other brands are showing signs if case failure or primers backing out, find another load and go hunt. Just my opinion.

    Short Barrel .308 Elk Load

I use the 178 ELDX for my LMT MWS with a 16 inch barrel. The reason I like it is after trying numerous factory loads to include TAP and FGMM, ELDX has the exact same point of impact whether my gun is suppressed or not. No shift when I add the can. Of course this is pure blind luck.

    Colorado bullet choices

I bought those no excuse bullets for my .54 T/C scout. 90 grains of pyrodex with a wonder wad produces good accuracy at 100 with iron sights. The thump of a 535 grain projo was phenomenal! Yeh my zero POI was 3 inches off but I was hesitant to fiddle **** with it as I knew my hold off.

To those wearing glasses, sight questions

But in summation, assuming you can’t use a red dot or low power scope because of regs or you just want to be more traditional, a rear peep is definitely the way to go. I have one with the screw in smaller aperture, but usually leave it out to make it more of a ghost ring. I can still...

To those wearing glasses, sight questions

Your method makes total sense to me. Basically doing what I do but approaching the solution from the other side of the mountain. Point is you have corrected to see the front sights even if the target isn’t quite as clear. I bet readers can be found that are eye specific, so you can adjust the...

Seek outside stove during burn ban?

We hunted September right after the big snow storm and we burned our stove every night as we were truck camping. There was a foot of snow by our tent for half of the week and then the melt kept everything moist for the remainder, so we felt zero concern about it. Regs as you stated were...

To those wearing glasses, sight questions

This sounds stupid but it’s true. I have to wear progressives &/or reading glasses now. My eyes are .5 off for distance vision. I am right eye dominant and shoot right hand. If I put my contact in my left eye but leave the right out, the left eye seems to pick up the target and the right...

    Drop camp food

Depends on the weight allowance. But we still mainly take mountain house meals but a bunch so we can eat up to 2+ per day. It’s just easier to deal with than actually cooking. For breakfast we take Kodak pancake mix and or instant oatmeal as all you need is water. Also take a boatload of VIA...

Older CVA been loaded for 2 years

Don’t you have a bullet screw attachment for your ram rod? Make sure no cap is in the nipple. Screw into ball, and pull it straight out the muzzle. Put your patch wormer on your rod to loosen the powder. Pull nipple and start flushing with hot water. It will all come out.

    Elk hunt was a bust.

I’ll be back, as Arnold says. ;-) just odd that the unit seemed so weird this year in particular.

    Elk hunt was a bust.

Do you guys think the elk herd is down b/c Colorado purposely reduced the herd? This may be unfair; But gut impression is that a bunch of farmers were griping about crop deprivation so they started issuing too many either sex tags during rifle season We had trips back into the same units back...

    Elk hunt was a bust.

We definitely made the best of it. We shot a couple grouse, pan fried them with a rub of spices and crushed ritz crackers. You could not have bought as good a meal even in Paris. Then we had quick peach cobbler made in the Dutch oven. Drained the peach juice into my cup, added snow and rum...

    Elk hunt was a bust.

Hunted south central Colorado. Guess it got 16 - 18 inches of snow the 2 prior days to showing up. Saw not one elk. Finally found fresh poop on day 4. Heard not one bugle. Walked out areas at 9,500 feet to 12,000 feet. Walked a lot of miles. Worst season for me in 20 years. Oh well, still had a...

    Game birds while elk hunting

I’m camped at 10,500 and hunting at over 11k almost every day. But I intend to look at the regulations and the internet and get a better idea of which is which.

    Game birds while elk hunting

I’ve never eaten a ptarmigan but hear it’s quite good. Looking forward to trying one if the opportunity arises.

    Game birds while elk hunting

Colorado. I’m gonna pull the regulations thought yo confirm suppressors are legal to hunt with there, but everything I have read so far indicates they are legal to hunt with. I carry it in a pouch so it’s easy to screw on and use if I run across some birds. Also carry a tiny eye drop...

    Game birds while elk hunting

I gather we can carry a .22 pistol to shoot ptarmigan while we bow hunt in most units, assuming the season are both open: C. Game Birds, except Migratory Birds 1. Any rifle or handgun for blue grouse; ptarmigan, (except in game management unit 39); Anybody doing this and are there any...
