I'm helping my young Nephew out by setting up his New CVA Wolf 50 cal muzzleloader. I was a little concerned with the placement of the rear sight as it is mounted a good ways down the barrel, but in-between, there are 4 scope mounting holes. I'm thinking it might improve accuracy to use one of...
I know folks like to knock Sitka. It is overpriced but most of it is pretty well made. The most durable of the sitka is a bit noisy for bow hunting. I always thought it odd that my pants have 2 Zippers though so you can either zip up from the bottom or zip down from the top to open the...
Unfortunately I have to agree with the decision to quell political talk. If everyone could do it calmly and without a lot of emotion it might not be so bad but it don't seem to work that way. I don't come here to talk about my political views but some can't seem to help themselves with...
So if I may ask, what state were you planning to hunt in? Maybe some could at least get you pointed in the right direction for next year or even later in the season? Were you planning Archery or Rifle?
It's a tough call, but I'm liking the domed Phelps calls too. I also like the Yellow and Blue BRO Phelps calls.
Attached is a few I have. All pictured are Phelps except one Carlton (brown).
I'm sure you are getting the drift by now. You certainly can't kill them if you can't find them so finding them is your first priority. It's not like you can kill them without finding them, least not in my experience. It would be nice though to head out into the woods and find a Elky looking...
3 Arrow tite spot. If I fling more than 3 at elk and nothing to show for it I figure I best go back to camp and check my bow, and or practice some more.
Between the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation with the help of the passing of Outdoors act great things will continue to get done to conserve our wildlife while at the same time continuing to give us hunters more access to public lands. To help keep that...
I've read about one montana decoy that looks like a cow Elk butt. It folds up small like 9"X9" I believe. I can't attest to the effectiveness but imagine that's the part of the cow the bull is most interested in.
Monkey see, Monkey do. I didn't know what the Bro kill pack was till I read this thread so I jumped on the bandwagon as well tonight and ordered the kill pack. Reasonably priced compared to buying individual calls.
Ross,
An impressive display of Horns on and off the bulls! Appreciate the info. My wife is used to seeing odd things in the fridge so a little box with some calls in it should't phase her.
Ross, I didn't necessarily mean to pick you to quote but saw you had sent like 10,000 messages and live in Elk country so assumed you probably have a more knowledgeable opinion than someone who just joined in 2020.
That said I would appreciate anyone's feedback as to durability of diaphragm Elk...
5'9.5" Was a runner many years up into my late 40's. In my younger years I felt overweight above 160 and I generally stayed under that weight up to around 40 years of age or so. Somewhere after that my weight went up to as high as 200. I've tried jogging several times with my weight in the...
JMH,
Concerning scouting, I didn't read every post so I don't know if anyone mentioned this but my thought would be that rather than take a individual scouting trip just arrive a couple days ahead of the season opener and do your scouting then. You have more than a year to scout google earth...
I'm always way behind the curve and just recently noticed they make mirrorless Cameras now and happened to see this post. So what is the advantage to a mirrorless camera and what are possible negatives without going too deep if you all don't mind?
I can't help ya personally but maybe if you post a little more info it might help you find a partner.
Like which season or for both seasons since I see you live in Utah and what time period etc. Best of luck on your hunt.
If recoil is a problem with the 06 a good modern recoil pad can do wonders. It's still going to recoil the same but will have much less felt recoil with a good pad. I have a lightweight 28 Nosler that kicks way more than a 06 but has a great recoil pad on it which make the thump tolerable.
If you really want to hunt you need to just go. You can always find places where there are not a lot of hunters. But don't expect it to be easy country to get into. The easier places to get into will have the most hunters. What will you do if you don't go? Probably be wishing you had gone I...
