    An etiquette question

Ive hunted grouse in NM many during archery elk season. No dogs but just walking around with a gun. I used to think of it as scouting for elk/deer until I can draw a tag (tags were easier to draw back then) and grouse were a bonus. Ive found some excellent elk spots while grouse hunting. If I...

Archery Setups to Minimize Frontal Shots

If your solo and don't like the frontal your optiond are either moving a few yards downwind after you call, trying to cast the sound of your calls, or choosing your calling position very carefully (or a combo) are a about the only things you do in your favor. Hanging elk quarters while hunting

Depends on how cold it is. It's usually pretty warm during the day where I hunt. If its going to be more than a day or two I try to find a processor that can cold store the meat. If I use ice I try to cool it down overnight and then put meat on top of ice. You don't want your meat swiming.. dry...

The different cuts of an elk?

Here's what I usually do. We eat alot of ground and steaks but I usually keep the clean whole muscle groups and freeze them individually until I figure out what I want to use them for. Backstrap & Sirloin steaks Top round steaks (great for chicken fried steak, stir fry, kabobs, etc (or if...

Learn the frontal if you want to kill elk

I've only used it once on a bull 8-9 yard shot and he fell in sight. Only problem was my arrow went in enough to puncture the stomach and I didn't find out until I cut a Lil to deep and green juice spewed out all over one of the backstraps. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

Learn the frontal if you want to kill elk

    Balancing sleep with time hunting

Im not a great mid-day napper. Also at least where I hunt, If you know where elk are going to be mid-day getting there early early am is overrated because they are usually in transition as soon as the sun comes up. Also I like hunting all day, Ive shot most of my bulls around bedding between 10...

Average (Open Sight) shot distance -Muzzleloader

My last mz bull was ~20yards. I had practiced out to 150, but was confident to take elk shots out to 100 before i went. My first bull was 160 but with a scope. Both dropped on the spot. I did miss a mule deer @85 yards last year, rushed a freehand shot and went over his back. So stuff happens...

Who will shoot a cow elk this year?

I usually say if I'm down to the last 2-3 days of the hunt and things have been slow I'll take a cow. But honestly if it's a real easy packout she's probably going down and I'll just hunt with/call for my buddy the rest of the trip. I love bugleing bulls but at the end of the day I want to fill...

    E-Scouting; Navigating the back country

Hard to tell sometimes without boots on the ground. Topolines are the best indicator but they can be misleading at times. I hunted a new area in Colorado a few years ago and was cliff ed out 2-3 times where the topo maps just showed a steep gradually slope. I like to measure (in onx or google...

    Building diagram calls

Nice! I bought most of my stuff from Pioneer 2-3 years ago. Maybe they stopped carrying it... I might need to buy a cutter someday. I just trace a piece of pipe that matches the curvature I want then cut it out with scissors and trim. So I make a few mistakes... Cheers Sent from my SM-G975U...

    Building diagram calls

OK found my notes, I'll caveat with saying that I'm still learning also and I haven't found the perfect recipe yet either. I'm just eyeballing it and it's hard to be consistent with the homemade jig, so when I started testing only like 1 in 5 would sound just ok, but 1 in 20 would sound really...

    Building diagram calls

I started building some a few years ago with a homemade jig. I haven't built any in a while so I need to check my notes for specs. my jig is homemade so I don't know specifically how much stretch, just how many quarter turns of the handle. I'll see if I can find my notes and get back to you...

    Asking for Closed Road Access

What kind of land does it go through? If it's public (especially federal) on all sides I would say no chance to legally use it for personal reasons. If it's gated private that gets you to a legal access spot, I would say it doesn't hurt to ask, but you may need permission in writing. Sent from...
