    Backpack as checked baggage

I would never check any backpack that I cared too much about. Those bag handlers don't give a damn about how your pack is handled and I would never judge the durability of a backpack or anything based on its condition after going through that. You might be fine 19 times out of 20 but some...

    Second Jobs

These are dark times for a toolpusher. I'm on a drillship, but I'm working 28 and 28, and I'm really lucky to still have a job. I've been surviving the cuts since 2014 and they have taken nearly a third of my pay. I like the offshore money, but I do it for the time off as well and would hate...

    Kifaru Urban Zippy vs Antero

The Zippy does have foam in the back panel but that's it. You can buy the frame sheet for it and that will stiffen it up. You're probably like me and just had to have the Kifaru, but for well over $300 after it's shipped and you get a hip belt or whatever, there are less expensive options that...

    Does Kifaru ever have sales?

I know they have the Rhino Den, which is usually items that are on their way to being discontinued or updated. If you sign up on their site or whatever, sometimes they send emails about certain deals, but there's not really much in the way of sales. Their gear doesn't depreciate much, second...

    All around day pack

I'm not really into the tactical look either, especially with all the bogus brands and new molle fads, but the THE Pack is a truly legit gear item, one of the few packs that has a "real" military presence from the time it hit the PX's in 2003 to today, so I find it acceptable on my back...

    Supplements

I've had decent luck with BSN products, specifically Syntha-6 as a post workout protein and N.O. Explode as a pre workout. People are effected differently by pre-workouts and N.O. Explode tends to get negative reviews from many but it did me just right. Problem is, I started to depend on...

    All around day pack

I use Kifaru and Mystery Ranch packs for putting weight on my hips for hunting and hiking but my old faithful day pack that I've had forever and is probably the most durable piece of gear I own is my Spec Ops THE Pack. It's probably overkill for anything short of combat, but it's a cool bag...

Pig hunting-good way to fill the freezer?

Cool! That looks just like south Texas in many areas. I was lucky enough to grow up on a ranch in the middle of hog country. I moved into the house that I grew up in with my wife and I bet I killed close to 100 hogs just from the house in the first 3 years of my marriage. Those were fun...

Pig hunting-good way to fill the freezer?

That looks like the armor over the shoulder....but that looks like the ball joint of a hind hip in the middle. If that's a hip, that is a fat hog!

Pig hunting-good way to fill the freezer?

I try to do some pig hunting every year and I keep a lot of it in my freezer. We cook a lot of it in the crock pot with BBQ sauce and I like to grind it into sausage. Seems like every batch that I kill tastes a little different. I've had some that are so good I cut the backstraps into steaks...

What's in your backcountry First Aid kit?

Not much for me....Band aides, ointment, alchohol pads and one of those tiny single AAA mag lights. I also carry a second pouch with paracord and biners for whatever emergency I might need them for. Only thing I've used it for is hanging meat. I guess I need to take a look at my first aid kit...

    Does anyone wear wool anymore?

I have an old wooly Pully from the Marines that is warm as hell. Kinda itchy though, so I wear a thin layer of modern merino under it. It's ugly as hell too. I rarely wear it unless it's really cold. I also wear cheap wool socks when I'm not wearing my Darn Toughs. They wear out really...

    Question

When rucking in cold weather in the Marines we were always told to stay "comfortably cool". If I'm hiking in the cold and am on the move I will tolerate a bit of a chill but I usually just wear a merino tee. If I get too uncomfortable I will put on a fleece over that, and sometimes put on a...

What's some gear you shouldn't need to get the top of the line?

I think I have the same Tees....got them from Costco. I've been using one for 3 years of constant hiking, hunting and snowboarding and it looks like new. I wear the black Carhartt bottoms and can never bring myself to pay for the more expensive boutique underwear from brands like Sitka, etc...

    Watches

I don't think a watch can take the place of a handheld GPS. Screen is small and only so many buttons to control the interface, which is just a PITA. I wear a G-Shock everyday. I've never killed one, only lost them some way or another. I bought my brother one of the first Tough Solar models...

    Threads you love to hate...

Not so much on this forum but threads debating the comfort of every-day-carry packs. Don't know why....especially guys who just carry around packs every day to work....or threads knocking a 1200ci pack for having uncomfortable shoulder straps or something anemic like that.

How much Vacation time do you get?

I get 6 months out of the year off, 28 days at a time. It's a rotating schedule so I don't get to pick my days off....either way, it's sweet and I've been completely ruined for real life. Been at it for just over 3 years, making lots of memories. I wish I could do it forever.

    Airlines and Packs

The airlines often have a clear bag (trashbag like) that is an option for bad weather. You can ask for that. It's a pretty tough bag. They put one on my bag once without me asking and I've asked for it one other time and they wrapped it up with tape for me. Other than that I use a duffel.

    Sunglasses

Eye relief....and I don't like touching the lenses with the binos.....and I'd rather it not be shaded when I'm looking for something.
