    Thoughts on 6.5-284

It's tough to trade that kind of accuracy for another 150 FPS in velocity, but a guy has to determine what is most important for his application. I too get really excited about tiny groups, but I am a hunter, not a target shooter. If I can get the higher velocity and still group between .5 -...

BTW, my Cooper Timberline has a 24" barrel.

Tohopko, No, I've not tried any 140gr bullets. I've developed loads for both the Barnes 127 LRX, and the Nosler Accubond 130 gr. Both loads are shooting .5 MOA plus or minus out of my Cooper Timberline. I found accuracy nodes with the 130 AB at 53.7 and 54.2 grs. Velocity is right around...

    Bullet Pulling

Just to clarify on your wink emoji... I use an RCBS collet style bullet puller and tighten with just enough force so it fully grips the bullet during the extraction process. I see no issue in reusing the bullet unless something went wrong and it was significantly scarred during the process...

    Bullet Pulling

Yep, I resize the neck again after pulling bullets. Takes a little time, but keeps neck tension consistent, and consistency is what generates tight groups.

    What is this? Any concerns?

I now have a custom bore guide from Mike Lucas that completely seals the chamber and keeps solvent from leaking back in while cleaning. I also swab the chamber with acetone, and fully clean all resizing lube from my cases after finishing my reloading. Problem solved for me.

    What is this? Any concerns?

Ejector plunger swipe. Could be a pressure sign or not. I recently dealt with this while working up loads with my new Cooper Model 52 Timberline in 6.5 - 284 Norma. I would occasionally get a slightly harder than normal bolt lift force after firing, and would have an ejector swipe on my...

How many rounds do you carry?

Full magazine and roughly another 10. This is probably overkill, but it's my OCD tendency to want to cover all things that could possibly go wrong. I've never taken more than 2 shots and I've killed a lot of big game animals. Only take shots you know you can make.

    .44 Mag reload question.

Very accurate out of my S&W 5" model 629 Classic.

    .44 Mag reload question.

My "fun to shoot" light load is 8.5 grains of Unique behind a 240 grain lead laser cast.

    Electronic Reloading Manuals and PDFs

Always fun to have a hard copy manual. My latest is the Nosler 5th edition. How old is that? ;-) Most all bullet and powder manufacturers have their current data available on-line. When I start working on a given load, I start by searching forums for guys' pet loads. I correlate the data I...

How complicated do you have to make reloading?

Above all, stay safe and sane. Use multiple sources of compare for your load data and always work up from the lower or middle range of listed powder weights. Don't just trust what you read on various forums without cross checking with other reliable published data.

How complicated do you have to make reloading?

Start simple. Learn as you go. Grow your tool set as you advance. Reloading is a hobby for me and it is so much fun to dial in a tight shooting load, with components that efficiently take the critter I am after.

    Thoughts on 6.5-284

Another very cool thing I've witnessed about Reloder 23 is that it's advertised de-coppering characteristic is for real. After shooting approximately 15 rounds with the load I've settled on there is no visible signs of copper deposits in the barrel. This is not the case with the other powders...

    Thoughts on 6.5-284

Regarding powders... I tried H4831, H1000, and Retumbo, before settling on Reloder 23. All powders shot well, but Reloder 23 was the only powder where I was able to get my accuracy node at the velocity I was looking for, without any signs of pressure.

    Thoughts on 6.5-284

Bought a Cooper Model 52 Timberline in 6.5 - 284 Norma this past year. I've not taken an animal with it yet, but have done quite a bit of load development work. I really, really, like it. I'm using Lapua brass, CCI 200 primers, Barnes 127 LRX and Reloder 23. My Magneto Speed is showing a...
